Give You The Keys

BEADS OF JOY 02-22-19
“Give You The Keys”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 16:13-19 (Peter’s Confession About Jesus)
“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Reflection:
This wonderful Apostle needs no introduction, we all know Peter. But for those who don't know Peter, I ask who is Peter? "As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen." Matthew 4:18. What did Jesus say to Peter at his boat? Jesus says this in The Gospel of Matthew, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." Matthew 16:18. Ok, now this all making sense I think I know who Peter is. Where else in scripture is Peter with Jesus?

Jesus Walking On Water
Calls Peter To Come

Matthew 14:25-33
"Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Peter Declares That
Jesus Is the Messiah

Matthew 16:13-20
"When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah."

The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-13
"After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist. "

Jesus Reinstates Peter

John 21:15-19
"When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again, Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

There is just so much to share about who St. Peter the Apostle was and is. He is a true man of honor and there is never only one time his allegiance was in question. In all fairness in sharing the whole story, many know it was Peter who denied Jesus, and Jesus predicted it. But Peter repented and remained loyal to Jesus after that. Below here I have listed to the best of my ability the order in which Jesus and Peter interact through the four gospels. I hope this is helpful.

Peter in The Gospels (in order)

-Peter Is Chosen and Called The Rock (Mark 1:16-18)
-Peter's mother in law is Healed (Luke 4:38-39)
-Jesus Walks on The Water, calling Peter (Matt 14:22-33)
-Peter Declares Jesus as Messiah (Matt 16:13-20)
-Jesus Predicts His Death, Peter steps In (Matt 16:21-28)
-Transfiguration. w/Peter James and John (Matt 17:1-9)
-Jesus Washes The Disciples Feet (John 13:1-11)
-Jesus Foretold of Peters Denial (Mark 14:26-31)
-Jesus Prays at Gethsemane, Peter sleeps (Mark 14:32-42)
-Jesus is Arrested, Peter Steps In (John 18:1-12)
-Peter Denies Jesus (Luke 22:54-62)
-The Resurrection of Jesus, to the tomb (Luke 24:1-12)
-Peter Escapes Prison, An angel guided him (Acts 12:1-11)

Peter's Death: "It is certain that Peter died in Rome and that his martyrdom came during the reign of Emperor Nero, probably in 64. Testimony of his martyrdom is extensive, including Origen, Eusebius of Caesarea, St. Clement I of Rome, St. Ignatius, and St. Irenaeus. According to rich tradition, Peter was crucified on the Vatican Hill upside down because he declared himself unworthy to die in the same manner as the Lord. He was then buried on Vatican Hill, and excavations under St. Peter’s Basilica have unearthed his probable tomb, and his relics are now enshrined under the high altar of St. Peter’s. From the earliest days of the Church, Peter was recognized as the Prince of the Apostles and the first Supreme Pontiff; his see, Rome, has thus enjoyed the position of primacy over the entire Catholic Church. While Peter’s chief feast day is June 29, he is also honored on February 22 and November 18. In liturgical art, he is depicted as an elderly man holding a key and a book. His symbols include an inverted cross, a boat, and the cock that crowed." excerpt from Catholic Online

Peter’s Confession

BEADS OF JOY 02-21-19
“Peter’s Confession”
©2019 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 8:27-33 (Peter’s Confession)
“And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men."

Reflection:
Who do you say that Jesus is? It is the Holy Spirit that guides us and leads us to Jesus. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we begin to understand the Gospel and who Jesus is in our lives. Do you openly allow the Spirit of God to work through you; so that you can witness and live a life of courage and faith, standing strong in your faith in Jesus Christ? Jesus never said it would be easy. For Him it took humiliation, suffering beyond what we could ever imagine and then eventual death upon a cross, a cross He had to carry.

If we ever intend to share in the Victory of His Resurrection, we to must also carry our own Cross. Some have light crosses in this life, while others have enormously clumsy extremely heavy ones. God’s knows what we can handle, and He only allows that which we can handle, no more. The Holy Spirit gives us the faith and the strength we need to know Jesus and to get through this life as witnesses to His Truth, His Word, His Victory over sin. Who do you say Jesus is?

Why in scripture does Jesus say to the disciples, “…tell this to no one”? That seems rather odd, wouldn’t Jesus want Peter to proclaim his witness, his faith to all? Well I found a wonderful, well explained explanation for His request for their silence, that I wish to share with you from Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD):

“There were things yet unfulfilled which must also be included in their preaching about him. They must also proclaim the cross, the passion, and the death in the flesh. They must preach the resurrection of the dead, that great and truly glorious sign by which testimony is borne him that the Emmanuel is truly God and by nature the Son of God the Father. He utterly abolished death and wiped out destruction. He robbed hell and overthrew the tyranny of the enemy. He took away the sin of the world, opened the gates above to the dwellers upon earth, and united earth to heaven. These things proved him to be, as I said, in truth God. He commanded them, therefore, to guard the mystery by a seasonable silence until the whole plan of the dispensation should arrive at a suitable conclusion.”

The Son of Man is destined
to suffer grievously

He Looked Intently

BEADS OF JOY 02-20-19
“He Looked Intently”
©2019 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 8:22-26 (Blind Man of Bethsaida)
“And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, "Do you see anything?" And he looked up and said, "I see men; but they look like trees, walking." Then again, he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored and saw everything clearly. And he sent him away to his home, saying, "Do not even enter the village."

Reflection:
Today Jesus healed a blind man. God wants all of us to be free, and He wants to heal us. Some people like to be lazy and want to be catered to. Instead, let us be aggressive in following after Jesus and in doing so, we can to try and stop our own sinfulness. Some people are curious as to "How" can I keep sin out of my life? What must I do to make every attempt to stop sinning? It's not all that difficult, I'm saying that stopping sinning (at least trying to) is not that difficult; here are a couple of the ideas to lessen it in your life is actually make it easier.

Awareness:
You know yourself, and what your weaknesses are. You know when you are at most risk with falling into sin. Simple awareness should keep you on your toes at the atmosphere around you.

It's A Choice: We inevitably chose to sin. Not too often are you forced to sin, I know work issues sometimes make it impossible not to. But if that is true, you can address it at work and stop. Jesus first, remember that.

Cease & Desist: Just be strong once and for all and stop all the evil you clearly know that is in your life, the evil you so choose to do. It could be talking about others, saying things that aren't true, over-eating way too much, and so much more. We all know our own weaknesses.

Run: Yes, you read that correctly, RUN. If you know a certain place, or certain people, or certain situations; that literally walk you down the wide path of sin, and you know the end result is always a certain sin, RUN. Run away as fast as you possibly can, and never look back. In scripture Jesus spoke about following Him and what we are to do, "Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62, that scripture fits in this situation perfectly with you flee from sin. No longer even glance back at that sin you detest and wish to get out of your life.

Build Walls: Not the southern wall… LOL. No these aren't real walls. These are protective walls, walls that separate you from the evil you are trying so hard to avoid. A wall can be, "Instead of going to that store or mall alone, bring your kids, or a spouse or parent." This wall blocks you from doing or buying something you will regret later. Make yourself accountable.

Take Heed, Beware

BEADS OF JOY 02-19-19
“Take Heed, Beware”
©2019 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 8:14-21 (True Bread)
“Now they had forgotten to bring bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." And they discussed it with one another, saying, "We have no bread." And being aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They said to him, "Twelve." "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" And they said to him, "Seven." And he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?"

Reflection:
In today's gospel it appears that the disciples have forgotten about how the Lord shall provide for them; and has always provided for them. How is it that those closest to our Lord were unable to know and believe that He would provide for them? The disciples also confused real bread with the bread of life, that our Lord gives us every day. But you know, I guess when you are closest to the anxiety of stressful times; you can't so easily see that which maybe obvious, at least compared to someone from the outside looking in. It works both ways, you know. Anxiety can create an imbalance in your life, and I can really relate to that. If you are going through challenges at a particular moment; anyone looking in, usually can't really relate fully to the impact of what you are going through. And I think the best way to explain it is like this: You know how you see a reporter out in a storm explaining it, telling you about the fierce winds and heavy stinging hard rain drops. And what is the typical reaction, "Wow, that looks horrible, it is really bad out." But honestly how could ever know the depths of the experience they are having, if we never got to actually experience it.

How do we deal with anxiety? If we are experiencing it, how do we handle it? And what if a family member or a friend is suffering in some way, and the burden on their heart is heavy, what can we do? I guess I don't have to say all that much, many people know what my family went through. Well that is a good starting point on this topic today. See, sometimes a family carrying multiple crosses really needed love, compassion and general kindness through it all. They usually don't seek a pity party, or "Oh I feel so bad for you guys." Honestly that don't help at all, when you are under the weight of fifty bazillions tons of stress hour after hour. Yes. You read that right, and that's on a good day. Our Lord's concerns were for that of the soul, not of the body; the disciples just didn't understand.

Do we really try our best, to pray with the utmost confidence, when we are faced with trials and anxiety that we just don't understand sometimes? You know sometimes we are put in a situation for a reason, and the situation may just be horrible, or devastating. But there's always a reason for everything that happens to us, God turns the bad into good. He himself does not minister the bad our way, He only transforms it into a good purpose and outcome. And unfortunately, so many people just can't see that. The longer my own spirit has been in love with my Lord, and that I can say I fully accept any and all outcomes, took some time. But the misfortune of one, not only helps to awaken the soul of that person but think of all the souls around that person. Many people have been spiritually healed by someone else’s devastating accident that they survived, and even died in. Others have been saved sitting side by side, day after day with a loved one suffering with cancer, or any other disease.

Today let's consider: A challenge for our own self in dealing with challenges, issues, anxiety, or whatever. Let us remember all of what Jesus has done for us and has given us. He died for us and Defeated Death for us. He remains in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. He unites with us, every single time we go to Mass and receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. He forgives us every single time we go to Confession. Let us think, He is present with us throughout our day and especially throughout our struggles. Keep your channel tuned to "Jesus" at all times, in all places and in all faces. Jesus is truly ever present with us every day. Jesus Christ 24/7/365.

Power in The Cross

BEADS OF JOY 02-18-19
“Power in The Cross”
©2019 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

How can anyone be expected to show love for us when we constantly reject them and spit in their face? Yes, that was a hard sentence to begin with, but true to the heart when you think about it. Jesus died for us, He took on every single sin, every single burden, including a humiliating painful death. He took it from us, so that through Him we might attain eternal life. My friends, Jesus Christ loves us so much. The power in the cross is beyond the power of anything in this entire world. Almighty God has placed His only Son on a cross to save us. Why would anybody do that? It's because He loves us so much. God who is love, who is life, who creates life, who has made male and female in His own image; took His only Son and had Him beaten almost to death, then humiliated and spit upon, in order to save all of us from our death. Because Jesus paid the price, we can be with Him for all eternity. It is only through Jesus' death on that cross, that we can enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. We must do all we can in this life to make sure to the best of our ability; that we indeed will spend eternity with Him. A huge price has been paid for our salvation. A man, the Son of God was put in our place, to die for us.

The world we live in will always deceive us, it will always mislead us. The world will do all it can to make sure that we do not spend eternity in Heaven. We must love Jesus before we can love or even forgive anyone else in our lives. This life was never meant to be lived so freely and so safe, that getting to Heaven would be such a breeze. On the contrary, satan has been given power of the earth and he has become a master of deceit and destruction. He will make us not believe things that we question. Think of satan as a parasite. Yes, a parasite, parasites are very small and very unnoticed, yet very destructive over time. Little by little we have doubts, we have questions, we're not sure, life seems like it's going to go on forever. We can always ask for forgiveness! We're not hurting anybody! ...and we can go on and on. Time to remove the parasites, the poison, the lies; and it's time to stay true to God. It's not going to be easy, we will suffer with Jesus, we will at times feel uncomfortable. But in time and with God's grace we will shall prevail and we will defeat all that is evil while we are here.

We need to know, that our addicts are the devil's greatest weapon against us, along with our attitude that we carry with them. Many people think, myself included, "I'm not hurting anybody, and besides it's not a public thing, I'm home." Meanwhile our lives, our souls, our hearts, and our families are being destroyed from within. Seeds of lies and deceit are filling us with all the acceptable reasons and excuses we give ourselves so that we can continue sinning. Think of the gospel where, Nicodemus (John 3:4) asked, “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” How can we change? How can we be any different than the person we have always been? How Lord ??!!! What must I do to inherit eternal life? If I am to be reborn, what should be my first step, how do I know I am reborn in the spirit? Our hearts and soul scream up to Heaven in a crying, sobbing voice, begging Jesus to guide us, to show us, to almost carry us. We can't do this alone, we are so weak, and our weakness comes from our inability to stop our addiction. Satan has many in a strangle hold and he keeps stabbing and jabbing our hearts with his anger towards God. Please Lord, help us break free from this bondage, help us never be squeezed in the hands of satan ever again.

It is only by your love for me Lord that I can break free from this pain. It is only by His death, a horrible, painful, humiliating death on a cross that we will be set free from the strong hold of evil. It is by His love given to us, telling us and showing us how much Jesus loves us. It is only by our humiliation on my knees before the cross, begging for forgiveness of the horrible pain we have inflicted upon Him with our sins. I must die to self, I must never return to that old wretched miserable, sinful person, I once was. I must turn away and never return to the vomit of my life. Jesus you alone, no one else must remain my only central focus, nothing can or should ever come before you. We all know that life doesn't always make sense. Each day we experience, pain, suffering, joy, loneliness, happiness, no understanding as to why. Then we look around and we see Jesus and in many ways it all makes sense. We must look at Him first, then everything else makes sense. There is so much power in the cross. Don't be afraid to embrace your cross.

Blessed Are You

BEADS OF JOY 02-17-19
“Blessed Are You”
©2019 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 6:17, 20-26 (The Beatitudes)
“[Jesus] came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea  and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon...

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. "Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh. "Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. "But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you that are full now, for you shall hunger. "Woe to you that laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. "Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.”

Reflection:
Our heart should be flowing with so much love and joy in today's reading. Our Lord begins sharing with us such words of wisdom and love. What joy, what excitement, what wisdom is flowing out of these words; this teaching is known as one of the most powerful, most dynamic teaching of all times. The blessings and woes in this teaching address' the real conditions of our humanity. The basic core and center nerve sensed throughout the Sermon on the Mount is about our love for our neighbor. This teaching is such an exciting motivation for us to hear, absorb and embrace in our lives. "When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law." Matthew 7:28-29

What is really one of the inner most desires of a person throughout their life, what do we thirst for? I liken our quench for Him like when Jesus spoke to the woman at the well. "Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14 This study and reflection reminds me also of another important book we should also have in our study library: The Catechism of the Catholic Church. In the pages of this book you will learn through biblical references how this entire book is derived from the Word of God. In the Prologue V.18 "This catechism is conceived as an organic presentation of the Catholic faith in its entirety." I referred to this book also to share with you some of the treasures of our Catholic faith within its pages. "Desire for true happiness frees man from his immoderate attachment to the goods of this world so that he can find his fulfillment in the vision and beatitude of God." CCC 2548

Are you beginning to sense the excitement and joy jammed packed into The Beatitudes? Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, He is the Christ, the Savior. Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." Matthew 5:17-18. "The Beatitudes depict the countenance of Jesus Christ and portray his charity. They express the vocation of the faithful associated with the glory of his Passion and Resurrection; they shed light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian life; they are the paradoxical promises that sustain hope in the midst of tribulations; they proclaim the blessings and rewards already secured, however dimly, for Christ's disciples; they have begun in the lives of the Virgin Mary and all the saints." CCC 1717

Blessed are you, holy are you, rejoice and be glad... Ok, Ok, I'm starting to sing again, some of you know that song, LOL. I enjoy watching the version of the Beatitudes in the movie "King of Kings" I actually can say it with Jeffery Hunter in full, verbatim, to the movie’s version. That is why I always say I really like watching certain movies over and over. Your brain begins to really be part of what you repetitiously are seeing and hearing. Repetition is the mother of all learning, skill, retention. But the question with the beatitudes is: How ever can we find any sort of happiness or joy in poverty, or hunger, mourning and persecutions? That is a tough question but here are some of my observations: First we must empty ourselves of all that would shut us out from God. Poverty of Spirit seeks out God alone. Hunger of Spirit seeks out nourishment for God's word. Combine just those two thoughts and your life will be changed.

Poor in spirit, means to be humble, humility is the realization of God's gifts for us.
