“Most Holy Trinity”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS
My Friends,
Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 28:16-20
(Commissioning of The Disciples)
“Now the eleven disciples went to
Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw
him they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them,
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."
Reflection:
Today is the feast of the Most
Holy Trinity. Today’s feast encourages us to reflect on the mystery of
God's own life, as he has revealed it to us, and to reflect on how our ultimate
vocation as his creatures is to share his life. The Trinity reminds us that
there's always a part of God that remains mysteriously and incomprehensibly –in
us –with us, so that the Christian life has a large element of prayer and
contemplation in it, to make God more comprehensible to us which draws into the
mystery of his life.
Our culture places so little value on quiet and stillness and contemplation and that’s no surprise. Some people have their appetite for God stifled, by the noise and distraction that they create in their own restlessness. There's also a tendency among some of the faithful to neglect the basic elements of personal spiritual life and a call to holiness. The value of today's feast is amidst the distractions and bustle with which we're liable to surround ourselves; it calls us back to God as He is in Himself and the great mystery of His most holy inner life. It calls us back to the fact that our basic personal vocation is to share that life with others as we maneuver our way through this life.

253 The
Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons,
the "consubstantial Trinity". The divine persons do not share the one
divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: "The
Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father
and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God." In
the words of the Fourth Lateran Council, "Each of the persons is that
supreme reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature."
254 The divine persons are really distinct from one another. "God is one but not solitary." "Father", "Son", "Holy Spirit" are not simply names designating modalities of the divine being, for they are really distinct from one another: "He is not the Father who is the Son, nor is the Son he who is the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit he who is the Father or the Son." They are distinct from one another in their relations of origin: "It is the Father who generates, the Son who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds." The divine Unity is Triune.

255 The divine persons are relative to one another. Because it does not divide the divine unity, the real distinction of the persons from one another resides solely in the relationships which relate them to one another: "In the relational names of the persons the Father is related to the Son, the Son to the Father, and the Holy Spirit to both. While they are called three persons in view of their relations, we believe in one nature or substance." Indeed "everything (in them) is one where there is no opposition of relationship." "Because of that unity the Father is wholly in the Son and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Son is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Son."
