Enter The Kingdom

BEADS OF JOY 09-30-18
“Enter The Kingdom”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Mark 9:38-43,45,47-48 (Temptations to Sin)
“John said to him, "Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us." But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward. "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.”

Reflection:
Do you allow the love of Jesus to transform your heart, your mind, your words and your thought, so that you may treat your neighbor with kindness and mercy and love?

Temptation is a horrible thing we all face. Temptation always goes after our weakest most vulnerable desires. Our inner strength must be strong, so strong that that even our desires don’t collapse under the opportunity to acquire that which we desire the most. I love chocolate and I confess that is my weakness, but praise Jesus for new habits I am no longer drawn into such an addiction. I never thought it would possible to “not” desire it; but with new habits and a better focus on taking care my body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, I think of things differently now.

We must remember that temptation is bait that draws us into our sins. For me my desire chocolate and non-stop eating led me to gluttony so many times. We need to be very aware of that in a very positive way. Staying alert and in tune with that which destroys us spiritually; will help us stay in tune with that which helps us be strong spiritually in times of temptation. Being aware of these things is what will help us get through the temptations much stronger than if we are naive to them. God knows the measure we can handle, we won’t be pushed to the point of no return. Look at scripture:

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” ~ 1 Corinthians 10:13

Let us be strong in our faith and in our love for Jesus. How can we stay distracted from our temptations, so that we don’t? Well, I am not perfect and yes, I do fail often; but what I have found works best is staying focused on our Lord and Our Lady as much as you can. Incorporate prayer (suggestion: The Rosary) into your daily life. Make it an elaborate part of your day, of your life, of your life’s mission and purpose. That distraction and positive reinforcement will help you be stronger in times of temptation. Often throughout a day I will pray the entire 20 decades.

Bishop Barron on Having a
“Personal Relationship” with Jesus

Pondering these thoughts today: Temptation in many ways is the litmus test to our faith. How much do we love Jesus? How much are we willing to neglect our own desires to stay true to our Lord? If we are such easy prey to fall victim to sin and offend our Lord; how true is our love for Him? God knows all that we do, including our hearts intentions and even if we come up with some elaborate explanation to make it acceptable, it doesn’t make it right. Sin is sin and temptation is usually the doorway to our sins. We need to make sure Jesus is at the doorway to help us not open that door.

Dear Lord, please always free my heart of envy and jealousy and every sinful thought and wrong desire, so that I may always treat each person with respect and goodness for the glory of your name Lord. For it is you Lord who makes judgment upon others, not me. I am only to love them and embrace them and pray for them and also forgive them. Our goal is to be like you Lord, how would you treat them?... AMEN.

The Angels of God

BEADS OF JOY 09-29-18
“The Angels of God”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: John 1:47-51 (The First Disciples)
“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”  And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Reflection:
Such a beautiful gospel. But honestly, how do you know for certain that through your eyes, you have seen Jesus in your life? I know not in person, but inside you “spiritually” how do you know? Nathanael knew without any doubt that this was Jesus, he said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Is our faith that solid, that certain? When you see Jesus in others do you know it without a doubt? When you see Jesus in those miracles small and large in your life, do you know it without a doubt? Every single day you awake do you look for Him or are you tuned out and too focused on what you want; rather than how Jesus is part of your life each day? Stay tuned to Him, He is ever present in your life.

Yes, many are skeptical, and many don’t believe, so does that mean Jesus isn’t here with us? No! If I said I believe the sky is blue and red and yellow. You might say, “You are crazy!” but then depending on when you are looking at the sky and at what hour and at what location it is those colors. I have pictures. So, was I wrong in my belief? No! That is what I believe. Just because someone else has their own story and monologue to convince you not to believe in our Lord; you my dear sisters and brothers can have your own, your story, your experience, your faith and you’d be correct just the same. Do not let anyone intimidate you or tell you, you can’t believe, or you shouldn’t believe, who do they think they are? Stand up for what you believe and know that you are not alone in your faith. Jesus is by your side always.

We live in a very different world today, compared to when I first gave my life to my Lord back in 1983. The world today is very violent and mean and horribly nasty towards those with any sort of faith, especially towards anyone with Catholic faith. In the past there was more respect for everyone’s faith, there were more respectful people in-charge. Regardless we must continue even if only in the depths of our hearts (which no one can take from us) we must love Jesus. Stay strong always my sisters and brothers and in all things love our Lord; He will always be there for you in all circumstances, no one else will know He is there, but you will. See you guys tomorrow.

The Christ of God

BEADS OF JOY 09-28-18
“The Christ of God”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:18-22 (Peter’s Confession)
“Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?" And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen." And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of God." But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."

Reflection:
Who do you say that Jesus is? It is the Holy Spirit that guides us and leads us to Jesus. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we begin to understand the Gospel and who Jesus is in our lives. Do you openly allow the Spirit of God to work through you; so that you can witness and live a life of courage and faith, standing strong in your faith in Jesus Christ? Jesus never said it would be easy. For Him it took humiliation, suffering beyond what we could ever imagine and then eventual death upon a cross, a cross He had to carry.

If we ever intend to share in the Victory of His Resurrection we to must also carry our own Cross. Some have light crosses in this life, while others have enormously clumsy extremely heavy ones. God’s knows what we can handle, and He only allows that which we can handle, no more. The Holy Spirit gives us the faith and the strength we need to know Jesus and to get through this life as witnesses to His Truth, His Word, His Victory over sin. Who do you say Jesus is?

Why did Jesus say to the disciples, “…tell this to no one”? That seems rather odd, wouldn’t Jesus want Peter to proclaim his witness, his faith to all? Well I found a wonderful, well explained explanation for His request for their silence, that I wish to share with you from Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD):

There were things yet unfulfilled which must also be included in their preaching about him. They must also proclaim the cross, the passion, and the death in the flesh. They must preach the resurrection of the dead, that great and truly glorious sign by which testimony is borne him that the Emmanuel is truly God and by nature the Son of God the Father. He utterly abolished death and wiped out destruction. He robbed hell and overthrew the tyranny of the enemy. He took away the sin of the world, opened the gates above to the dwellers upon earth, and united earth to heaven. These things proved him to be, as I said, in truth God. He commanded them, therefore, to guard the mystery by a seasonable silence until the whole plan of the dispensation should arrive at a suitable conclusion.”

He Sought To See

BEADS OF JOY 09-27-18
“He Sought To See”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:7-9 (Herod Sought To See Jesus)
“Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen. Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him.”

Reflection:
There has been many portrayals and scriptural translations teaching us how much King Herod respected and feared John the Baptist. He considered John a great prophet and servant of God. Yet John had no fear or respect for Herod. That’s why when Jesus came along this troubled him or as scripture says this “perplexed” Herod. At first, he thought Jesus was John raised from the dead; so he sought Him out and had to see for himself. See Herod was, by his own choices riddled with guilt and sin. He could not find peace knowing someone “like” John who he knew he had killed, was out there without seeing him for himself. Sin and Guilt. Two horrible powers we can become slaves of…

There is only true way to peace and that is through Jesus Christ. Only Jesus can set us free from any chains of sin and/or guilt. Jesus promises to lead us to real freedom and eternal peace if we listen to His voice and obey His Word. This world can be very deceitful and misleading, a vacuum of words and promises that will trap you and pull you in. So many of us get so caught up in promises and glamour and glory in the eyes of the world; that we forget that once we are here no more all of this doesn’t matter anymore. In the span of our short time here on earth 60-70-80, maybe 90 years, ok some, few make 100 years, we are gone from this place. Then the place we are going to, we will be in for all eternity. Hmm… Now let that sink in for a while. How long is eternity? I can’t answer that; the number will take all eternity for me to say… Yep!

But today’s Gospel has another reflection of thought. King Herod admired John the Baptist. Who do you admire? Who do you want to be like? Whose life is the example of the life you are trying to emulate? Is it someone with authority? Someone in the News? Some from Hollywood? Someone is History? Someone Wealthy? Be careful, obviously it’s your choice. But keep in mind, the people we surround ourselves by and those we admire will inevitably be who we turn out to be. Obviously just because we admire famous people does not mean we become famous. But what it does do, is waste our life away, while we could be spending it focusing on what really matters. Did you just ask, What? Hmmm… You really want my opinion and reflection? Well I guess that’s why you are here. Ok, get out your pen… Focus on Jesus and see how His life is working through your life. Spend time in prayer every single day. Really stay focused on preparing for eternity while you live a life pleasing to our Lord. Go to Mass, adoration and confession (frequently)! Lead others to Jesus by example. Do not be selfish. Help others every chance you can. Live a simple, very fulfilling life that has Jesus, our Lady and the Rosary in it 24/7/365… Well that’s my life. See you all tomorrow.

Preaching The Gospel

BEADS OF JOY 09-26-18
“Preaching The Gospel”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:1-6 (Mission of The Twelve)
“And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.”

Reflection:
Do you believe Jesus has chosen you like He has chosen the twelve? Our Lord chooses very ordinary people like you and me to do the extraordinary to share and bring others to Himself. No special education, no special requirements, many times Jesus reaches out to the broken, the weary and even the oppressed to build His Kingdom. Once the Love and Mercy of Jesus is in our hearts, our lives are never the same, we are transformed. That transformation allows our Lord to work through us as we share our faith, our story and our love for our Lord and His Mother with others.

Hear The Word

BEADS OF JOY 09-25-18
“Hear The Word”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:19-21 (Jesus And His Family)
"Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you." But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

Reflection:
Today’s gospel is a tough reflection. I know some who don’t love Our Blessed Mother and take this opportunity to say, “See!!” My response is simple, “No, I don’t see!” So today I will instead reflect upon our spiritual relationships; which I guess really is a direct reflection of today’s gospel. Who do you have in your life that is of spiritual influence on you, as you continue your journey following Jesus? This can be a friend, family member, neighbor, prayer team member, a Priest, a Religious, even someone in the public eye, on TV, online… God allows certain people to pass through our lives for a reason.

This person should not be worshiped or honored. This person can be admired and loved. I have 5 people I call my “Spiritual Super Heroes” I have a blog I wrote about them in. Today I will simply speak and share who they are; and why I feel so fortunate to have them in my life:

#1. Fr. Gerald Mullally –Born 05.11.50 -PASSED AWAY on 12.14.11
(we’ve been friends since 1991) what can I say that I haven’t already; and that I will continue to say? He was truly one of my bestest best friends. He was truly my brother. I was always able to contact him directly. Cell phone, text, email, Facebook, twitter. He was always available to me, no matter what. It didn’t matter. We spoke most every single day to some degree. He was my Spiritual Director for many years, back when he wasn’t comfortable being one. I begged him to be mine. He agreed and I showed what to do. LOL… I always had a Spiritual Director in my life. Eventually he became an incredible adviser, spiritually for me. No matter where I was living, we always made time for one another. I miss so much, words won’t ever convey the loss in my heart. I can write volumes of books about all that Father and I shared.

#2. Jack McElligott -Born 01.13.25 -PASSED AWAY on 10.15.10
(friends since 1992) a very dear friend indeed, he to, has gone to be with the Lord. I miss you Jack. Jack was a man who I spoke to, online, on the phone, and in person. One day, a few months before he passed away six years ago, (when Chrissy first got diagnosed with cancer) he said to me while hanging out in my yard, “You know Jim, I get it, and I think I really understand you now. No matter how much stress you are under, no matter how many horrible things get thrown at you, you stay upbeat and happy and joyful all the time… It’s the depths of your faith, isn’t it?” I said, “Of cause it is Jack, it always has been.” He just smiled at me and said, “You have a wonderful gift, the gift of Joy in your heart, I am so happy for you Jim.” That was one of our last real wholesome faith filled conversations we had. That was also the time I ever since, before he died. I really miss him, he was one, wise, generous, giving, loving, incredible man. He never judged anyone, never spoke bad of anyone, always stayed positive and always gave all he had to everyone.

#3. Jerry Kelly –Born 11.04.45 He was 67 y/o -PASSED AWAY on 04.10.13
(great friends since 1983) The Leader of Our Lady’s Pathways prayer group. And a dear close friend of mine, he was there from the beginning, when I first gave my life to Jesus. Jerry is a true man of honor and a true man of God; his private words to me during our prayer time, always touched the prayers that I privately prayed. God spoke through him many times to me. His love for our Lady is the love I learned from for her. I always think of him (Jerry) when I am really into my love for Mary. I always try to emulate his love for her. I met Jerry back in 1983 just prior to him and Carol starting (Our Lady’s Pathways Prayer Group), which I joined. He and I met at (Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group) at the convent. And we also together belonged to the (St. Patrick’s Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group) in Richmondtown, Staten Island. Jerry was an incredible Spiritual Role Model. Strong and Bold in his faith and love for our Lord and our Lady. I really miss you Jerry.

#4. Fr Peter Calabrese
(been friends since 2001)
He is the Associate Director of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Lewiston, NY. He is busier than ever these days, compared to the days when I use to hang out with him and Fr. Julio at the shrine. He is living the life I would have loved to live if I were to be a priest (which I did at one point, point out to him when we first met). Fr Peter was also my Spiritual Director for many years, when we lived up in Niagara Falls. He is a man with some incredible insightful wisdom. His bible studies were out of this world.  I really miss living only 6 miles from the Shrine, but I will be again very soon. There was one time I told Father I envied his life. He was utterly amazed, and he told me no one has ever told him that before. Then I shared my past desire to be a Priest and my love for our Lady and the Rosary; and how his life at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine would have been the life I would love to live. It would have been my Heaven on earth. He got it! Now I am full circle back to this most incredible, beautiful place on my discernment journey to the Priesthood. Wow!

#5 Al Picogna OFS
(we’ve friends since about 2005)
Al is my Franciscan brother and my closest friend. He and I talk most every single day. He pointed out after Fr Mullally’s passing that he understands the depths of my sorrow. Same with Chrissy and now with my journey to the priesthood. Al’s insights and deeply rooted faith-based life are a true inspiration to me. He is a remarkable friend, a true man of honor and an incredibly devoted dad to his daughters and their families, and wonderful attentive grandfather. His family is so fortunate to have a man like him in their lives. There is no doubt in my mind that in many ways he is the Mother Teresa of our time. Respectfully. He is a giving man who does not put himself or his own needs first, ever. He always puts the needs of others first, whether it’s his children, grand-children, friends, or even his ex-wife. Al amazes me but does not surprise me, with his generosity and love towards others. Thank You Al for being a true example of a Catholic who puts others first all the time.

See The Light

BEADS OF JOY 09-24-18
“See The Light”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16-18 (Parable of The Lamp)
"No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away."

Reflection:
Living in God’s light means that all our secrets are brought out into the light for God to see. Yes, that can be frightening if we are hiding something; but it can also be a blessed freedom of joy to, to be out of the darkness. Our mission if we are to assume one in this life; is to be the one who brings the light of Christ to others. To help them see the truth of the Gospel, free help them from the blindness of their sin and help them out of the deception of this world. Yes, we have a lot of work to do.

Do you know there is so much Joy living in the Light of Christ? None of us are perfect, no not one! But we are all children of God and we are all saved and forgiven and cleansed of our sin by His Holy Blood. All we must do is ask, seek and knock and Jesus will there for us for all eternity. Surrender to Jesus fully my friends, there is no better life to live. Those who choose to be against God I believe only do so because they have never ever had a relationship with Him. If they knew of His love and mercy and compassion they’d never a life that did not embrace Jesus.

I reach out to all of you who maybe never considered a life devoted to Our Lord. I reach to you, to tell you He is the One the Only One who you should be worshiping and adoring. Jesus Christ died so that you, me, all of us might live eternally with Him and The Father in Heaven. If you don’t know Jesus Christ, maybe it’s time to get to know Him. Kneel down wherever you are, bow your head and ask for Jesus to come into your life. He will change your life for the better. He will never ever leave you or forsake you. He will always be there for you. He will always give you a feeling a calmness and peace in this world of discontent. Even if someone is shouting at you for loving Jesus or threatening you because of your love for Jesus, you will find peace even in that situation. Nothing can or could or would ever separate you from His love. Nothing! See you all tomorrow.
