“Do Not Weep”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 (Jesus Raises A Widow’s Son)
“Soon afterward he went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.”

Reflection:
This miracle produced much reverence and probably even fear seeing this person called Jesus, give life to the dead. This miracle happens the day after Jesus healed the Centurion servant. Quickly Jesus became the famed Miracle Worker, which was fine with the people who constantly surrounded Him; but from the prophets who hated Him, this brought much hostility. Spiritually we as believers can see how this very power of “raising of the dead”, will apply when He Himself is crucified.

Our Lord’s desire of life, not death is evident here. Only Jesus can make us whole again. If notice in this gospel, “he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still.” The bier is a stand on which a corpse or a coffin containing a corpse is placed before burial. The Jews understood that if touched a dead body it would make you unclean and impure. Only Jesus has the power and ability to touch the unclean (us, sinners) and make them (us) clean.

Where Justice, Love,
and Mercy Meet

Pondering these thoughts today: How much do you trust Jesus? Do you believe He is the light of the world? Does His power and ability to raise the dead, riddle fear through you; or do you feel more reverence and respect towards Him now? How do we handle the loss of a family member? Do we turn to Jesus, trust in Jesus and ask Him for a healing? I wonder, as many do; did Jesus have such compassion on her for the fact that this man was her only son, she was a widow, and this young man was more than most likely taking care of his mother; hence jeopardizing the future of this woman. No matter, Jesus shows compassion; e must trust that He always shows compassion for us, as we face all our trials and losses.
