Where Is Your Treasure?

“Where Is Your Treasure?”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 6:19-23 (Treasures In Heaven)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

Reflection:
Do you store up treasure in Heaven, where those treasures for eternally last? Think about this for a moment: What in this world can you keep in place that will never rust, never be stolen and will never lose its value? I guess that was a rhetorical question, the answer is Nothing!! Nothing on the planet has eternal value, literally nothing. Spiritually reflecting that is so exciting. So, what this scripture is saying in a roundabout way is this: In order for us to have the freedom and ability to grow spiritually and closer to Jesus, we must not attach ourselves to anything here; because nothing here has the ability to continue to Heaven with us.

Now how realistic is it to attain Heavenly Treasures? And then how do you enjoy these treasures after you have died? Those thoughts confuse many worldly people, and they never seem to understand the Spiritual life. I’ll help you out with ways I store MY TREASURES in Heaven... Yes MINE... LOL. What do I store in Heaven and yet I have here on earth to enjoy?

Eternal Treasures in My Heavenly Account:
Account# All-Things-Jesus 24/7/365 = eternityDaily Investments go into: Our Lord, our Lady and the Rosary.

~Love for the Trinity (Father, Son & Holy Spirit)
~Love for the Blessed Mother and the Rosary.
~Prayer life (my communication with Almighty God)
~Bible Study (God’s Word is Eternal, I love the Holy Scriptures)
(This world has no power whatsoever to take any of these things from me, and in the end even death cannot take them away from, rather death only compliments these incredible treasures.)

Pondering these thoughts today: How do you see your life? Where are you storing your treasures? Do you know “Spiritual Wealth” will lead us to eternal freedom while “Material Wealth” is corrupt, misleading and will steal our eternal life away? What is your reality? Our sight is easily blinded and blurred by moral stupidity and a spirit that is blind. Other ways our vision gets distorted is most certainly by prejudice and selfishness.

My friends I end with this thought: Live your life for God’s truth alone, bury yourself in His Word; unite with His Mother –Praying The Rosary every single day and spend as much time as you can with Jesus on the brain, always!!!

“Pray Then Like This”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 6:7-15 (The Lord’s Prayer)
“And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Reflection:
Today let us reflect on the meaning in all its splendor to this most magnificent prayer. The Lord’s Prayer Aka The Our Father. For starters I will use the Catechism to help direct us through today’s reflection. You will see lots of references today. I share it like this today, because I believe it is so important that we truly down deep in our hearts understand our prayers.

Catechism of the Catholic Church References
#2761: The Lord's Prayer "is truly the summary of the whole gospel. “Since the Lord. . . after handing over the practice of prayer, said elsewhere, 'Ask and you will receive,' and since everyone has petitions which are peculiar to his circumstances, the regular and appropriate prayer [the Lord's Prayer] is said first, as the foundation of further desires."

#2763 All the Scriptures - the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms - are fulfilled in Christ. The Gospel is this "Good News." Its first proclamation is summarized by St. Matthew in the Sermon on the Mount; the prayer to our Father is at the center of this proclamation. It is in this context that each petition bequeathed to us by the Lord is illuminated:

“The Lord's Prayer is the most perfect of prayers. . . . In it we ask, not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired. This prayer not only teaches us to ask for things, but also in what order we should desire them.” ~St Thomas Aquinas

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

As we look further into this let us look at how The Lord’s Prayer has 7 Petitions with in it. This is why the #7 is always signified with Jesus.

#2803 After we have placed ourselves in the presence of God our Father to adore and to love and to bless him, the Spirit of adoption stirs up in our hearts seven petitions, seven blessings. The first three, more theological, draw us toward the glory of the Father; the last four, as ways toward him, commend our wretchedness to his grace. "Deep calls to deep."

Here are the 7 Petitions with there (Latin) translation. And a simple brief statement from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#).

1st Petition: Hallowed be Thy Name (Sanctificétur Nomen Tuum) #2858: By asking "hallowed be thy name" we enter into God's plan, the sanctification of his name - revealed first to Moses and then in Jesus - by us and in us, in every nation and in each man.

2nd Petition: Thy Kingdom come (Advéniat Regnum Tuum) #2859: By the second petition, the Church looks first to Christ's return and the final coming of the Reign of God. It also prays for the growth of the Kingdom of God in the "today" of our own lives.

3rd Petition: They will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in coelo, et in terra) #2860: In the third petition, we ask our Father to unite our will to that of his Son, so as to fulfill his plan of salvation in the life of the world.

4th Petition: Give us this day our daily bread (Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie) #2861: In the fourth petition, by saying "give us," we express in communion with our brethren our filial trust in our heavenly Father. "Our daily bread" refers to the earthly nourishment necessary to everyone for subsistence, and also to the Bread of Life: the Word of God and the Body of Christ. It is received in God's "today," as the indispensable, (super-) essential nourishment of the feast of the coming Kingdom anticipated in the Eucharist.

5th Petition: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. (Et dimitte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris) #2862: The fifth petition begs God's mercy for our offences, mercy which can penetrate our hearts only if we have learned to forgive our enemies, with the example and help of Christ.

6th Petition: And lead us not into temptation (et ne nos inducas in tentationem) #2863: When we say "lead us not into temptation" we are asking God not to allow us to take the path that leads to sin. This petition implores the Spirit of discernment and strength; it requests the grace of vigilance and final perseverance.

7th Petition: But deliver us from evil (Sed libera nos a malo) #2864: In the last petition, "but deliver us from evil," Christians pray to God with the Church to show forth the victory, already won by Christ, over the "ruler of this world," Satan, the angel personally opposed to God and to his plan of salvation.

Pondering these thoughts today: In your quest to “find” Jesus in your life; do you feel that you can approach Him at any time? Every day let us pray the Lord’s Prayer in confidence as we worship, love and adore our Lord. I originally wrote about this, the year Chrissy’s oncologist said she would not live to see Christmas that year. In all my writing: 2010 (this is the year Christine was diagnosed and was in the hospital a lot) and 2013 (the year we searched for doctors to get answers) were my two most in-depth years of writing. I come here for peace and security in that I can best express myself in the depths of my study and prayer.

Love Your Enemies

“Love Your Enemies”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48 (Love of Enemies)
“You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Reflection:
This topic and focus is difficult for me. I don’t really have any real direct personal enemies. When I say “don’t really” I am referring to the general enemies; people who want to harm my family, people who wish to take away my freedoms and those threatening me because of my faith. All those enemies are not on a one-on-one personal level with me in my face. An overall general thought of love and forgiveness towards them showers my heart with love when I think of them. I know I am not living in a bubble, if I am then it’s leaking water; because my world is not full of sunshine and roses all the time. More now than before.

The real enemy I feel the most against us in the past, was the cancer Chrissy died from, and the suffering she endured throughout those six years. Debilitating, lingering illnesses are the enemies. So, to be completely honest, when I look at them and remember what cancer and suffering did to my beautiful wife and our family, I hate them. I must embrace both of them. I have no trouble embracing my own suffering and even my own death; I can deal with that and embrace it, but watching those I love, suffer, that is extremely difficult. But having said all that, here I am hindsight thirty-one months later, I will embrace the horror of cancer and suffering, knowing how valuable the time left with those you is.

I must admit, this is very difficult. But, as the Lord tells us, let us pray for this enemy. This enemy has brought many tears to me and my family, we don’t fully understand all these things. On a positive note, it has brought us closer to one another and to our faith. So maybe, just maybe there is a glimmer of light here.

Pondering these thoughts today: Sometimes our enemies aren’t always people, but illnesses that put us to the test of our faith. That is exactly sometimes what an enemy would do, test the purity of your faith and love and cut you to the core. I embrace this disease and all that comes with it, with a willing heart to find a way to see the positive in it. God knows my heart and He knows what this has already done to Chrissy and our family.

Go With Him Two Miles

“Go With Him Two Miles”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 5:38-42 (Teachings About Revenge)
“You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist one who is evil. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if anyone would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.”

Reflection:
How do you repay, respond or act when insults are hurled at you? What if someone took advantage of you? Are you kind? Do you have the courage to return evil with good? Do you stop the evil -right then and there or do you continue it with revenge and hurtful, hateful words or actions back at the other person? If we are to follow after Jesus and if we are to be like Jesus; then for many -this aspect of our faith might be very difficult and challenging. In all of Jesus’ teaching it is very clear that we must never show retaliation; rather we must respond with mercy, love and kindness. Evil cannot be defeated by fueling it with more evil, rather it must be distinguished with love and kindness. Just like darkness can easily be defeated with light, even the smallest amount of light can easily be seen in the darkest of places. So, must we return evil with good.

Only at the Cross before Jesus will we be able to free ourselves from the selfishness and empty conceit of hatred and resentment. This takes great courage to be like Jesus, don’t misunderstand this and see this as weakness. Weakness gives in and caves in and we hurl back at others. It takes great courage and great love for someone to not respond in such a way.

Look at Jesus: How did He respond? Even on the Cross, He suffered insults, abuse and deep-rooted hatred; yet He responded with love, by asking God to forgive them. It is through His blood, that we also will be able to merciful and loving; even to those who hate us and insult us. My friends we are not like those of this world in so many ways. We don’t attach ourselves to the things of this world; we don’t get all involved with the selfishness of pride that goes with titles and values based on worldly accomplishments and now added to that we learn by Jesus’ example to detach ourselves from the insults and hatred of the world that are directed towards us. This won’t be easy, Jesus never said it would be.

Pondering these thoughts today: Consider the Prayer of Anselm. “O merciful God, fill our hearts, we pray, with the graces of your Holy Spirit; with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. Teach us to love those who hate us; to pray for those who despitefully use us; that we may be the children of your love, our Father, who makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. In adversity grant us grace to be patient; in prosperity keep us humble; may we guard the door of our lips; may we lightly esteem the pleasures of this world, and thirst after heavenly things; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Our faith is distinct most significantly in how we treat others; even and most especially to those who treat us with hated.

The Most Holy Trinity

“The Most Holy Trinity”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: John 16:12-15 (Work of The Holy Spirit)
“I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Reflection:
Our hearts and minds will be enlightened by the wisdom of the Spirit of the Truth today. The inseparable Triune God has been brought into our lives. We do not have to full understanding exactly what this mystery means; but no matter we know and trust God’s greatest intentions for us. All we need to know is that all are equal, and all give to one another unconditionally equally with no other intent other than to do for each other. Later in today’s blog I will share some of Fr. Mullally’s wisdom on this subject.

How can we personally know all three, yet all separate and distinctly separate, yet still one? Come on, that's a great question. But many may even answer it like I will. Each distinct person of the trinity play unique roles biblically and personally. I'm no scholar, just a bit addicted to my Lord, His Father and Mother and The Holy Spirit; so sometimes my insight can't be seen from the street, you need to come into yard, past the fence. Did that make sense? So, come on over and check this out. God is the ultimate part of the trinity, he is the creator, the God head. “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Mark 13:32. See God the Father is in-charge. While the Son is our Savior, the sacrifice sent by God to save the world, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17. And the Holy Spirit will be our helper, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26. There is obviously way more to that, but you get the gist, there are three separate yet distinct persons -in the trinity.

Pondering these thoughts today: How often through your day, through your trials and even through your challenges do you listen attentively to the Holy Spirit? How do you refer to the Holy Trinity? Do you share your love for and understanding of the 3 persons of the Trinity? Many don’t understand it, but that’s Ok, we will do our best to help them understand it; and all goes well the Spirit within them will help us, help them.

It was best said back in a homily Fr. Mullally did on May 30, 2010, I video tapped many of his homilies. Here’s what he said, "What is God? God is a total unity of three Persons, an eternal community of living love, of mutual self-giving. There is no holding back, there are no hidden agendas, there is no manipulation. The inner life of God is absolute, no-holds-barred generosity, eternal and unlimited self-giving. That is God: three perfect divine Persons who perfectly share the unique divine nature." Insight-fully magnificent Father, thank you. Father's homilies were always like this.

Simple – Yes or No

“Simple – Yes or No”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 5:33-37 (Teachings About Oaths)

“Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, `You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply `Yes' or `No'; anything more than this comes from evil.”

Reflection:
How difficult is it to speak the truth? How difficult is it to know the scriptures? How difficult is it to immerse your heart, soul and mind into God’s Word and become so familiar with it, that referencing it and even knowing the surrounding scriptures becomes easier and easier? I have a method of my own design, that might interest you.

For starters let’s back up a bit. Let’s understand that in order to “download” good solid truth and scripture into our hearts; little by little we must change our ways of absorbing so much that is of a bad influence in our hearts, our minds and our soul. Many, many years ago; in 1983, I read the entire Bible (2 times) and then I was so taken by how exciting reading it was I began really get into wanting to absorb scripture more and more into my life. Then I wrote out (by pen and paper) all four Gospels and The Acts of The Apostles. There is a little ditty I learned back then when I was a kid in the 70’s, “Garbage in – Garbage out”. It meant whatever garbage you were watching or learning, inevitably it would come out of your mouth or your way of thinking. That’s another huge reason why I don’t drink any form of alcohol or smoke anything.

So, after digging deep into scripture, I came up with an idea that worked well with me. And this plan may work with you. Even if only once in a while or one week a month. “Whoever Marries”

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 5:27-32 (Adultery & Divorce)
“You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. "It was also said, `Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”

Reflection:
This too is a very difficult topic for many. Marriage and our vows and divorce are different for different people, meaning that everyone has their own issues that they are dealing with. So, I do not wish to use examples that are hypothetical, I will use only examples I am well aware of, should the need of an example come up.

I know many are divorced; this blog is not pointing fingers at anyone. This is just a scripture reflection, if your situations in your life or your children’s lives have you in harm’s way, you did the right thing. I am only reflecting on scripture and sharing some bible study details I have learned.

In marriage God has joined together, both male and female, “the two will become one flesh”. Those are God’s words. Any two (items) permanently combined with glue, combine because of the dissolving solvent, and then when you attempt to separate them, one or both will and can be damaged or destroyed. In marriage both mind and spirit and flesh become one. We know for a fact, if it is reasonably, safely possible, working on your marriage is what should be done, attempted and tried with all effort, before ever considering and taking steps towards divorce. 30 years’ experience, of some incredible ups and some horrible down turns; has taught me a lot about the marriage experience. We went on two Marriage Encounter weekends (to complement our relationship). What about counseling? I know, Who needs counseling? We all need counseling. Counseling is a great way to have someone in the middle to help guide you, till you can better guided yourselves.

Some basic recommended activities in a Christian Marriage include:

1. Pray together for each other, and with each other. (Rosary)
2. Read together, God’s word and other enriching books. (Bible)
3. Make decisions together, small, medium and large ones.
4. Attend Mass together, praise Jesus as a couple.
5. Continue dating; keep the romance in your marriage.

Do all you can, every possible way you can, to maintain and repair your marriage daily. I have a dear friend whose wife divorced him, he didn’t want it, and all she wanted was her independence. His response after many years of divorce has been, taking a vow of celibacy; in his heart, he is still married, and truly in God’s eye, he really is. He does nothing to cause arguments or waves, in fact he works it just the opposite, keeping harmony in his marriage with his ex-wife and his children, grandkids and their families. His example has shown me, that even when it’s impossible to fix, it can still be mended. God knows our hearts. Seek out what God wants you to do, but with that said, be a peacemaker and our Lord will show you the way.
