The Visitation

BEADS OF JOY 05-31-18
“The Visitation”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 (The Visitation)
“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever." And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.”

Reflection:
Today’s gospel is The Visitation, The Canticle of Mary, The Second Joyful Mystery. Mary not only said yes, and trusted so unquestionably in God’s request, His Will for her; but that faith built the foundational block that brought our Lord to us through her womb. So many people have little respect for our Blessed Mother, I just can't comprehend their lack of it. Mary basically gave up her life completely and she did what God had asked of her, and most importantly Mary never pursued her own desires, hobbies or interests. Obviously, only to some degree I guess I can say that. But let's face it, she couldn't have a public life, she couldn't boldly do things; lest she risk sharing her pregnancy. So, her life was hidden for the most part, with the main objective to raise and love her Son; to help Him grow strong for what was ahead.

We'll never know the full heart and mind of Mary, but we do see and understand the sacrificial life she had. Her faith is such an example to live, for anyone who believes in Jesus. For it was through Mary that Jesus came into this world and into our lives. Jesus didn't magically appear one day, and then Mary and Joseph stopped by the local hospital and adopted Him. No, God through the power of the Holy Spirit touched Mary's heart and she said “Yes” when the Angel Gabriel approached her at the Annunciation. A choice that would change her life and ours for all eternity. Mary's mission ultimately became the first mission to believe solidly in God's Will for her to bring Jesus into this world. The Holy Spirit is simply amazing, I know first-hand how powerful and genuine and impressionable the Holy Spirit is in one’s life. We just have to be open and be ready for the Holy Spirit to work its miracles in our lives. It's not always easy to understand it all, but honestly, I don't think we have to. That's where our faith and trust must come into all aspects of our lives.

Everywhere Mary went, the Holy Spirit touched others. The Visitation in today's gospel tells us, "And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit" verse 41. This is a little bizarre, but I guess that's what makes my blogs interesting at times. Remember "Mary Had a Little Lamb", bear with me for a moment, my mind has so many weird, useless things stored in it. LOL. I want you to think about this part of that for just a moment. "Everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go." Oh wow, does that not resonate to the full meaning and purpose Mary has been in our lives. To me that means if you are "into Mary or a Marian Devotion" Jesus will surely be there; point being that you go to her to get to Him. Absolutely exciting, joyful, incredible news pondering that simple thought. Our faith can be as complicated as we so desire it to be; or we can keep it simple and to the point and spend all of our time loving Him. I prefer the simple life, of loving and worshiping my Lord while I adore and love His mother.

Mary is our role model, our Lord's Blessed Mother, and our mother. Let us embrace her and with the same faith in the same Holy Spirit as she had. Would we do what she did? Do we have that kind of courage and faith that she had? I really doubt it, yes, we can say yes now, because of everything we know; but what about back then, Mary risked her life by saying yes. She didn't just say yes, because she had to, she didn't say yes, because she was told to; she said yes, because of her faith and trust in God's will for her in her life. She knew better than we could ever know now, the risk of an unmarried woman being pregnant in her time. She could have been stoned to death. Instead of worrying about her own selfishness in this life, she risked everything to fulfill God's will to bring to us our Savior. We really should be forever indebted to her for living such a life of sacrifice as she did. Now on that same thought, it was Mary who brought Him to us. Trust in our Lord to guide your heart to loving her, simply pray, "Jesus, I trust in You".

To Give His Life

BEADS OF JOY 05-30-18
“To Give His Life”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Mark 10:32-45 (The Ambition of James and John)
“And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Reflection:
Are you ready to give up everything, even your very life in service to others? Jesus taught us to pick up our Cross and follow Him?  Why would that sacrifice be such a Joy? I know to some that makes no sense. In today’s gospel some of the disciples seem to have wanted power and recognition and authority, so they too can be side by side with Jesus. Thinking Jesus had this “celebrity” recognition of fame. Jesus’ life was a life in preparation for sacrifice. I don’t think the disciples completely seen what we obviously can see from our vantage point. Had they fully understood at that time the mission Jesus was here for maybe; just maybe they wouldn’t have so aggressively wanted to be so equal with Him at that time. I could be wrong.

We must have love in our hearts and we must be humble at all times. The Cross of Christ can be bitter, many of the disciples will soon indeed die horrible horrific deaths because of that Cross. Their love is sincere, and their commitment is real, and their example is a good one for us to learn by. How much do you really love Jesus? How much does your life reflect that love? Are you bearing a Cross in this life that has some “Faith & Belief” packed on it? In other words, are you ridiculed for your faith? That’s a lot to digest I know. I have been mocked and it may sound crazy, but I felt humbled with joy, to be hearing such slander.

Can You Drink the Cup
(…reflection by Fr. James Kubicki)

Pondering these thoughts today: Are you willing to die for Jesus? If you were told to decide Jesus or death? What would you choose? Now be careful and think clearly. Because at some point Jesus will look upon you, one on one, eye to eye, and that chose will be a reflection of that conversation on that day. Another way to look at this… Jesus or You? Who do you choose? Remember Jesus died for all of us to save us. Choosing ourselves is selfish; choosing Jesus is being loyal and faithful to one who died for us, the one who saved us, the one who forgave us. Pray about these things, the Holy Spirit will lead your heart. Our Lord knows the deepest desires of our heart, simply allow the Holy Spirit in and the believe you, me, the Spirit will lead you directly to Jesus.

First Will Be Last

BEADS OF JOY 05-29-18
“First Will Be Last”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 10:28-31 (Parable of The Rich Man)
“Peter began to say to him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

Reflection:
I think the real question today, in this gospel is this, for three days we have been reflecting upon this parable: Where is your treasure? Think about this: We ask God to bless us in business and we ask God to bless us in the success of our careers. The caution I see is the pride and selfishness that often comes with wealth; and that usually means those who have it, tend to forget others who need help. Not everyone, I know that. When we are blessed, we must not forget those who God has placed in our lives, who need our help. Some of this is repetitive these past few days, but that is a good thing. Always beware, of how the enemy uses what we perceive as good, to destroy us.

Let us take a look at what St. Clement of Alexandria wrote, "Do not let this passage trouble you. Put it side by side with the still harder saying Jesus delivered in another place in the words, 'Whoever hates not father, and mother, and children, and his own life besides, cannot be my disciple'. Note that the God of peace, who exhorts us to love our enemies, does not arbitrarily require us literally to hate or abandon those dearest to us. But if we are to love our enemies, it must be in accordance with right reason that, by analogy we should also love our nearest relatives... But insofar as one's father, or son, or brother, becomes for you a hindrance to faith or an impediment to godly life, one should then not collude with that temptation. Attend to the spiritual, rather than the fleshly, meaning of the command."

Daily Reading for Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

Pondering these thoughts today: Above everything, we must take into consideration, the cost of true discipleship. So, are you in or are you out? Think of this, as a ship leaving the dock, you are either on the ship or you are off the ship, you can’t do both. After the last few days of readings, you should be able to make up your mind. Jesus speaks straight, pure, truth now. To what measure are you willing to follow Him? You must forsake everything and everyone! Wait did you skip that last sentence, that’s Ok I’ll just say it again, I was probably talking so low, no one heard me anyway. YOU MUST FORESAKE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE! Your life must be consumed by Jesus completely. Yes, it’s all about Jesus and it should be always be all about Him. Seek Jesus, through the eyes of your spouse, your children and your family and friends. See the heart of Jesus in them and be the heart of Jesus for them. You can do it!

Treasure In Heaven

BEADS OF JOY 05-28-18
“Treasure In Heaven”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Mark 10:17-27 (The Parable of The Rich Man)
“And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: `Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth." And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

Reflection:
Good morning my dear sisters and brothers. Another fantastic week has begun, and it always begins with Jesus. Today's Gospel, The Parable of The Rich Man teaches us a great lesson. Material wealth can be like chains to this earth, unless we guard our hearts and set our treasure on God, and His everlasting kingdom. Where is your treasure?

Of cause we can have nice things, a nice home, some possessions; the real question is how attached and entangled is our minds and our hearts in these things? The problem I see with possessions, is that they inevitably possess us. What good is it when we are consumed by them? God’s gift of love to us, is priceless, more than every single possession and every single treasure that exists on earth combined. Our real treasure, is in Heaven, it is there that our hearts and our minds must be consumed.

I am not against wealth, nor am I against free enterprise and the opportunities that allows everyone to become wealthy and successful. The dangers of all this success is that wealth has the power to make us prideful and selfish; wanting to even build a wall around us to protect and save all our wealth. That’s the dangerous part of success. In today’s parable Jesus says a very powerful statement, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." I think the secret to real success, within your success is; are you doing all you can to take care of the poor around you? You don’t have to become poor giving to the poor, don’t misunderstand that. Are there family members suffering in poverty, or a neighbor or a friend or even someone you heard about in Mass. Basically, is there anyway through your blessings of success, that you can make someone’s life easier and lessen their burden?

Christ and the Rich Young Ruler

Pondering these thoughts today: Today’s refection and parable are all about being able to give it all up for someone else. It’s the full release of our possessions and wealth owning us. Do you know someone who is suffering? Do you know someone who is hungry? Do you know of someone or a family that you know you can help? You can do it anonymously! There are ways to help others that keep your identity secret, so that you and our Lord know what you have done. Maybe someone needs food so badly and they have been praying for God’s mercy and you send them a food store card with $50 or $100 on it. What a true blessing that is for them to receive and for you to give. Pray about it, consider it. Help a neighbor or a friend as best you could. I will be praying for you.

Dear Jesus, For so many of us, you have captured our minds, our hearts, our lives, our thoughts and you opened to us the treasures of heaven so that we may unite with you. You shall always be my treasure and my delight and nothing else will ever keep me from giving you all of me. May I always give to others with a heart of love; never selfishly holding onto the gifts you have given me... AMEN.

Most Holy Trinity

BEADS OF JOY 05-27-18
“Most Holy Trinity”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 28:16-20 (Commissioning of The Disciples)
“Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

Reflection:
Today is the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Today’s feast encourages us to reflect on the mystery of God's own life, as he has revealed it to us, and to reflect on how our ultimate vocation as his creatures is to share his life. The Trinity reminds us that there's always a part of God that remains mysteriously and incomprehensibly –in us –with us, so that the Christian life has a large element of prayer and contemplation in it, to make God more comprehensible to us which draws into the mystery of his life.

Our culture places so little value on quiet and stillness and contemplation and that’s no surprise. Some people have their appetite for God stifled, by the noise and distraction that they create in their own restlessness. There's also a tendency among some of the faithful to neglect the basic elements of personal spiritual life and a call to holiness. The value of today's feast is amidst the distractions and bustle with which we're liable to surround ourselves; it calls us back to God as He is in Himself and the great mystery of His most holy inner life. It calls us back to the fact that our basic personal vocation is to share that life with others as we maneuver our way through this life.

Hope you enjoy all these very helpful videos:

What is the Trinity?

The Trinity Explained

The Trinity in the Old Testament

The Trinity in the New Testament

Pondering these thoughts today: Look at this...
The dogma of the Holy Trinity
…found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church

253 The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the "consubstantial Trinity". The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: "The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God." In the words of the Fourth Lateran Council, "Each of the persons is that supreme reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature."

254
The divine persons are really distinct from one another. "God is one but not solitary." "Father", "Son", "Holy Spirit" are not simply names designating modalities of the divine being, for they are really distinct from one another: "He is not the Father who is the Son, nor is the Son he who is the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit he who is the Father or the Son." They are distinct from one another in their relations of origin: "It is the Father who generates, the Son who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds." The divine Unity is Triune.

255
The divine persons are relative to one another. Because it does not divide the divine unity, the real distinction of the persons from one another resides solely in the relationships which relate them to one another: "In the relational names of the persons the Father is related to the Son, the Son to the Father, and the Holy Spirit to both. While they are called three persons in view of their relations, we believe in one nature or substance." Indeed "everything (in them) is one where there is no opposition of relationship." "Because of that unity the Father is wholly in the Son and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Son is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Son."

Bring Children To Him

BEADS OF JOY 05-26-18
“Bring Children To Him”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 10:13-16 (Blessings of The Children)
“And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them, "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.”

Reflection:
Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Opps, you know I stole that from a song. But it is 100% true, to God everyone is important. The disciples may have seen the children as noisy and loud at times; but Jesus didn’t see them that way, all he wanted to do was be with them. How do you feel about children? Are they a problem to you? A nuisance you can do without? An issue you’d rather not discuss? You don’t have to say anything, so I will tell you how I feel about kids instead…

I love kids! I just wish we had more than 5 children of our own, I wish we had 8 or 10. I didn’t come from a big family, I only had 2 sisters, but my overall extended family was huge. And that gave me a GREAT desire to have a big family one day. My dad is one of 8 and my mom is one of 3. Whenever we had family gatherings there were countless family members everywhere, cousins and aunts and uncles and WOW I loved it!! I still remember the sound of the rumbling laughter and chatter of us when we were all together. Great memories of the past. And growing up visiting family was one of our normal weekly family activities. Oh, how I miss those days. Now everyone lives all over the country and so many them have gone to be with Jesus. Those were the days my friends, we thought they’d never end. Opps drifted off into song again... LOL Here is a picture of our 5 kids many years ago. I love this picture of them together.

Suffer the Little Children to Come unto Me

Back then there were no cell phones, no iPads, no one cared about what was on TV, we didn’t even have cable. Clothes and sneakers weren’t an issue. Our greatest joy was being together. I can still remember my cousin Larry getting all the cousins on the steps in front of Grandma’s house and he’d play games with us. Sometimes guessing games and we’d talk and take walks. Play catch. Larry would take us for rides in his 1968 Chevy Chevelle Convertible which later became my dad’s which we restored. So many incredible memories. Memories of us cousins as “kids” who simply loved to be together and have fun together. Back in the 60’s – 80’s it was a much different world than it is today. Today, well I guess it all depends on where you live, but today the kids tend to be more absorbed by their technology. Many are not lost in the family relationships and gatherings, the chatter and the laughs. They have no idea what they are missing out on. I try to instill that to my children. The value of family relationships is priceless.

Pondering these thoughts today:
The children. You can be a parent, a grandparent, an Aunt or an Uncle, a cousin; no matter who you are, you are in contact with the children in some way. We must remember, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” For the most part, a child will fully trust and say exactly what they feel, and they don’t fear criticism. There is a certain innocent boldness about their overall demeanor.

These are my children: James 3rd, Christopher, Sarah Ann (my Pickles), Travis and Charlie.

Go Your Way

BEADS OF JOY 05-25-18
“Go Your Way”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

This is at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima.
This is the very place, where I will take my Priestly journey and be a Priest.

Today’s Gospel: Luke 10:1-12 (Mission of The 72 and You)
“After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace be to this house!' And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; heal the sick in it and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you; nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that town.”

Reflection:
How do you witness the truth and joy of the Gospel to others? We must go in love, peace and simplicity. Our Lord told the 72, “Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals;” they were to place complete trust in Him and have their undivided attention on the sharing of the Gospel. They had to travel lightly in order to avoid any distraction; they were sent out to work hard and expect no reward or pay. Yes, that may sound harsh, but it was insightfully brilliant. Our Lord’s purpose and plan is always perfect, even though we may not initially understand it, in time it all makes sense. The gospels always tend to lead us to a place that leave us relying fully upon the Lord and trusting completely in Him. So, by scriptural examples, we to can do the same. Just look at today’s gospel.

So, they went out completely reliant upon the Lord to sustain them. Now that’s faith! It was by that faith in Jesus, that they were able to keep moving forward. And by receiving no payment, this allowed them to work with love, for the care and concern of others; rather than the objective to acquire wealth as their goal and objective, which would have preoccupied their hearts and mind. Our Lord wanted them to be fully focused to the task of sharing the Proclamation of God’s Kingdom. Giving of our life and our time and our talents to our Lord’s service, should be our single most joyful objective in this life. We only have this one life-time to give, but we are uncertain of its length. Let us do all we can to use this time wisely to serve Jesus, by leading others to Him.

Do not allow anything in this life to distract you or mislead you away from Jesus. There are many out there whose only objective is to lead away believers and lead them away to the slaughter. Stay strong to the course of your faith. Stay aware of your surroundings always. Pray daily and ask Almighty God to guide you and protect you in all situations. We live in a world that for now does not like us (Catholics). Yes, there are 1.2 billion of us worldwide; but we must be strong in the wave of hatred against us. Love those who hate us. Pray for those who persecute us. God knows our hearts and of cause, we want to even see those people who are against us saved. God wants everyone saved.

Daily Reading for Friday, May 25th, 2018

Pondering these thoughts today:
We must love everyone, never hate someone, never do anything to harm another. Jesus is the one we must follow and be like, He is our example. Even Jesus on the Cross forgave those who crucified and killed Him. Our hearts must always be filled with love. Be strong my sisters and brothers.

Also, I believe we are most effective when we live with so much less burden of “things” in our lives. I say this from my own 35 years of experience serving my Lord. Back in 1983, I had very little and I evangelized tremendously, with so much time in my life and in my head available to Jesus. Here I am now widowed and recently decluttered completely, and I am ready to run full steam again. In the middle time-period of all that, our Lord gave me a ministry, raising a family (I will always continue to be a supportive dad.) and to be loyal husband and care taker to my sweetie-pie. So much to think about. See you tomorrow.
