My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 24:46-53 (Ascension of The Lord)
Jesus said to the Eleven: "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the temple blessing God.”

Reflection:

Today’s Gospel is the second Glorious Mystery. The Ascension is celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter Sunday, this incredible feast day celebrates the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first novena, or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday and ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later.

In the Eastern Church this feast was also known asanalepsis -the taking up; and also as the episozomene -the salvation; denoting that by ascending into His glory Christ completed the work of our redemption. The terms used in the West, ascensio and, occasionally, ascensa, signify that Christ was raised up by His own powers. Tradition designates Mount Olivet near Bethany as the place where Christ left the earth. The feast falls on Thursday. It is one of the Ecumenical feasts ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter and of Pentecost among the most solemn in the calendar, has a vigil and, since the fifteenth century, an octave which is set apart for a novena of preparation for Pentecost, in accordance with the directions of Leo XIII.

Pondering these thoughts today: The Feast of our Lord’s Ascension -also reminds us of another very important vital fact. Jesus encourages us to carry out our task in the world, no matter what the weight of our Cross is; let us keep in mind that Jesus waits for us in heaven as well. In other words, our life here on earth, which we may love, is not definitive. We do not have a permanent dwelling place here, but we seek that which is to come (Hebrews 13:14), a changeless home, where we may live forever.
