I Saw You

BEADS OF JOY 08-24-18
“I Saw You”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:45-51 (Come And See!)
“Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see!" Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

Reflection:
Such a beautiful gospel. But honestly, how do you know for certain that through your eyes, you have seen Jesus in your life? I know not in person, but inside you “spiritually” how do you know? Nathanael knew without any doubt that this was Jesus, he said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Is our faith that solid, that certain? When you see Jesus in others do you know it, without a doubt? When you see Jesus in those miracles small and large in your life, do you know it, without a doubt? Every single day you awake do you look for Him or are you tuned out and too focused on what you want; rather than how Jesus is part of your life each day? Stay tuned to Him, He is ever present in your life.

Yes, many are skeptical, and many don’t believe, so does that mean Jesus isn’t here with us? No! If I said I believe the sky is green and red and yellow. You might say, “You are crazy!” but then depending on when you are looking at the sky and at what hour and at what location it is those colors. I have pictures. So, was I wrong in my belief? No! That is what I believe. Just because someone else has their own story and monologue to convince you not to believe in our Lord; you my dear sisters and brothers can have your own, your story, your experience, your faith and you’d be correct just the same. Do not let anyone intimidate you or tell you, you can’t believe, or you shouldn’t believe, who do they think they are? Stand up for what you believe and know that you are not alone in your faith. Jesus is by your side always.

We live in a very different world today, compared to when I first gave my life to my Lord back in 1983. The world today is very violent and mean and horribly nasty towards those with any sort of faith, especially towards anyone with Catholic faith. In the past there was respect for everyone’s faith, there were more respectful people in-charge, not today. Now many are out to destroy and remove any believers. Regardless we must continue even if only in the depths of our hearts (which no one can take from us) we must love Jesus. Stay strong always my sisters and brothers and in all things love our Lord; He will always be there for you in all circumstances, no one else will know He is there, but you will. See you guys tomorrow.

Few Are Chosen

BEADS OF JOY 08-23-18
“Few Are Chosen”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 22:1-14 (Parable of The Wedding Feast)
“And again, Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again, he sent other servants, saying, `Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, `The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so, the wedding hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, `Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, `Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."

Reflection:
This rather simple story about a wedding feast is actually; two very complicated stories about the original guests and the ones without an invitation who ended up being invited. Making this Wedding Feast, one to remember. But we need to keep in mind that Jesus is telling us this parable, as a story and He began it like this: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son,” A very simple interpretation for us there. Almighty God is having a Feast for His Son Jesus and we have all been invited. With all of my many years of being part of three Catholic Charismatic Prayer groups the first thing that comes to mind with today’s gospel is this song:

Table of Plenty w/ lyrics

I hope that helps set the tone and you felt good singing that most incredible song. God invites each and every one of us to His Heavenly banquet so that we might celebrate with Him. Yes, like this story, many in this world will completely ignore His invitation and few will come. See in the first part God reached out to His chosen and biblically they refused Him over and over and over again. You can read all about that in the Old Testament. It wasn’t until the New Testament that it became part of the second part, of this invitation Wedding Feast story that got directed towards the rest of us. Do you see now how this story comes together? Through Jesus Christ we are called, we are invited.

Both the Good and the Bad have been invited, the “sinners” aka “the Gentiles”; an invitation of Grace, underserved, but most certainly kind. God invites each of us, unworthy and with sin; but through the death and blood of His Son we have been chosen to be at His Banquet to celebrate and share the love and Joy of God’s Son. This invitation is an awesome responsibility one we must take seriously. Remember how Jesus ended this story, “For many are called, but few are chosen."

I Choose To Give

BEADS OF JOY 08-22-18
“I Choose To Give”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 20:1-16 (Workers In The Vineyard)
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So, they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?' They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You go into the vineyard too.' And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.

Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?' So, the last will be first, and the first last."

Reflection:
Today’s gospel indeed shares extraordinary generosity, and absolute equality with all who were chosen; in the eyes of the one who hired everyone, to work in his vineyard. He saw no difference between those who worked through the heat of the day and those who only worked for one hour. They were all paid equally. He simply seen them equal in that they wanted to work. They all were out seeking a day’s wager so that they can return home to feed their families and not go home hungry. A day without work meant a day without food for themselves and most likely for their families. Hunger and poverty was more than real in Jesus’ time. There were no government food cards or Walmart’s in town. Families did help families, but most families were in the same predicament.

God’s generosity and love in our lives for us is endless. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we are guided and led to Jesus to honor Him and to serve others. Do you use your labor and talents cheerfully to serve the Lord and to serve others? And even more than that… Do you give to those in need generously like Jesus’ example today? I know most of us can’t be like the one who did the hiring in this parable taught today, but some of us can. I know I am poor, but we know in our own poverty we can still give of our love, our prayers, our compassion, a hug, a card, a call, share a meal. There are so many ways even in our poverty, that the poor can help the poor.

The Best Way to Conquer Pride
With Bishop Robert Barron

Pondering these thoughts today: Today I have learned that no matter what the circumstances are, there are no excuses to be able to help someone in need. We should all be looking out for one another, helping one another, making sure one another is in some way being taken care of. And should there be any question, then we should do all we can to try to find a way to help direct those who can help them, to them. Our goals in life really shouldn’t be so self-centered; they really should be more others-centered. We’d all live in a much better, more peaceful world if we all did. Let us pray for peaceful generosity amongst one another. A truly commendable goal.

First Will Be Last

Today Chrissy is 58 y/o in Heaven
BEADS OF JOY
 08-21-18
“First Will Be Last”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 19:23-30 (The Rich Young Man)
“And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”

Reflection:
I think the real question today, in this gospel is this: Where is your treasure? This is why I see Jesus always speaking so cautiously to everyone about wealth. In my heart I don’t see Jesus, not wanting us to be successful and wealthy. Think about this: We ask God to bless us in business and we ask God to bless us in the success of our careers. The caution I see, is the pride and selfishness that often comes with wealth; and that usually means those who have it tend to forget others who need help. When we are blessed, we must not forget those who God has placed in our lives who need our help. We really need to do this, seriously.

Let us take a look at what St. Augustine of Hippo has to say about this in one of his sermons: "Even though you possess plenty, you are still poor. You abound in temporal possessions, but you need things eternal. You listen to the needs of a human beggar, yet you yourself are a beggar of God. What you do with those who beg from you is what God will do with his beggar. You are filled, and you are empty. Fill your empty neighbor from your fullness, so that your emptiness may be filled with God's fullness." That is a lot to digest I know, but wow that is to the heart of all those who never answer the call of the needy. We need to be accountable for those in need around us. Especially those of us who can certainly help those in need. God has blessed many; He has answered our prayers. Now is the time to bless them and help answer their prayers.

It is hard for a rich man
to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

What did Jesus mean when He said,
“Take up your cross and follow Me”?

Pondering these thoughts today: Where is your treasure? Where is your generosity? This is why in today’s gospel Jesus say’s “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Jesus was referring to the narrow gate into the city of Jerusalem. Locals called it “the eye of the needle” because in order for a camel to get through it, all the possessions it had on it, had to be removed off it, and it had to be brought through it on its knees. The true removal of pride and possession and brought down to one’s knees in humility. Very powerful words by our Lord. I love doing biblical research. See you tomorrow.

Joy of The Mass

BEADS OF JOY 08-20-18
“Joy of The Mass”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

This is St. Patrick's Church; Milford, PA

Today I'd like to take just a moment and reflect upon the Holy Mass, that is the Holy Mass of the Roman Catholic Church. I am almost speechless with how beautiful and breath-taking it truly is. I absolutely get excited to be able to be at Mass, to kneel before the altar before Mass begins, looking in awe at the cross, the tabernacle and how truly precious and beautiful what was about to begin. Many years ago, (1986) actually back when I was first got married and me and my dad were just starting out in business, I attended Mass every single day before I even went to work, I did that for many years. My day was so complete when I received before I began. Then many years later when we were living in Niagara Falls, I joined up with an early morning Rosary group at St. Christopher's in Amherst, NY. We'd meet up in the chapel, we prayed the Rosary together and then all went to Mass together. Oh, how I miss that precious group of such devout, beautiful people.

I have been asked by obviously those who don't attended Mass, actually also by even some who do, "What is it that you see so special or fantastic (as you say) about the Mass?" I am a smiley kind of guy, so if before I respond to a question, if I give you a very joyful, extremely happy smile; you just know I will answer that question with no problem. For starters it's a combination of our Lord's presence, our traditions, and the prayers we pray, and the reverence we have approaching Jesus. I have to tell you, there is nothing I don't love about the Mass I love every aspect of it. I almost plead with all of you, if you can, if you can, please go to daily Mass; your life will never be the same. Jesus will instill inside of you such a love, such a joy, such true devotion to Him, deeper than just a Sunday love. And that’ spectacular if you go to Mass on Sunday. But if you can, it will truly be the best investment of your time that you have ever made in your entire life.

I just want to share a couple of the prayers that I absolutely love. I feel so close to my Lord when I take the time to pray before Him with a community of people who love Him as I do. I really love all the prayers at Mass.

Penitential Act

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Then they continue: therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. The absolution by the Priest follows: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ,
Only Begotten Son,
Lord God,
Lamb of God,
Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

These are incredible prayers. I just love it when a priest always allows us to pray these prayers at the beginning of Mass. Thank you Fr. Mullally, you really had a most special, very holy way of serving Mass for us. I miss your Masses.

I have attached a link that will walk you through the entire Mass. It's called "The Order of The Mass". Please embrace this, even read and recite and engulf yourself into the Mass entirely, even if only by reading the words as often as you can. I get the missal, like the church has in Mass, sent home to me. Way back in my early years of being born again, I use to literally spend hours, many many hours re-experiencing the Mass by reading through the missal over and over and over again, and wow did I fall in love with Jesus at Mass. I am so in love with Jesus, I can't get enough of Him. I still do that by the way, I usually always have a missal with me, it is such a special way to spend time with our Lord.

Pondering these thoughts today: Today I challenge you to look at the Mass in a whole new light. Maybe for the first time like this, with such love for our Lord. Really get into the prayers, learn all the prayers and all that the priest will pray; that alone will make the Mass come to life for you. And if you can, attended daily Mass, you will never be the same ever again, your life will be forever changed. Simple ask our Lord to guide your heart and life in the direction He so wants for you, and in doing so pray, "Jesus, I trust in You."

He Who Eats This Bread

BEADS OF JOY 08-19-18
“He Who Eats This Bread”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: John 6:51-58 (Body & Blood of Christ)
“I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So, Jesus said to them, ", truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever."

Reflection:
Today we shall focus on the magnificence of the Eucharist. It is not a mere representation of Jesus, on the contrary; the bread and wine becomes Jesus. Jesus clearly says, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." So, at every single time you go to Mass, a miracle is witnessed. This is why, we must go to Mass as often as we possibly can. Not only to witness the Mass and be there; but more importantly to be in God’s presence.

“In this world I cannot see the Most High Son of God with my own eyes, except for His Most Holy Body and Blood.” ~St. Francis of Assisi

“Christ held Himself in His hands when He gave His Body to His disciples saying: 'This is My Body.' No one partakes of this Flesh before he has adored it.” ~St. Augustine of Hippo

“O Lord, we cannot go to the pool of Siloe to which you sent the blind man. But we have the chalice of Your Precious Blood, filled with life and light. The purer we are, the more we receive.” ~St. Ephraem

“I hunger for the bread of God, the flesh of Jesus Christ ...; I long to drink of his blood, the gift of unending love.” ~St. Ignatius of Antioch

“How many of you say: I should like to see His face, His garments, His shoes. You do see Him, you touch Him, you eat Him. He gives Himself to you, not only that you may see Him, but also to be your food and nourishment.” ~St.  John Chrysostom

“He remains among us until the end of the world. He dwells on so many altars, though so often offended and profaned.” ~St. Maximilian Kolbe

“He is The Bread sown in the virgin, leavened in the Flesh, molded in His Passion, baked in the furnace of the Sepulcher, placed in the Churches, and set upon the Altars, which daily supplies Heavenly Food to the faithful.” ~St. Peter Chrysologus

“My Jesus! What a lovable contrivance this holy Sacrament was - that You would hide under the appearance of bread to make Yourself loved and to be available for a visit by anyone who desires You!” ~St. Alphonsus Ligouri

“Jesus has prepared not just one Host, but one for every day of our life. The Hosts for us are ready. Let us not forfeit even one of them.” ~St. Peter Julian Eymard

“The devotion to the Eucharist is the most noble because it has God as its object; it is the most profitable for salvation, because It gives us the Author of Grace; it is the sweetest, because the Lord is Sweetness Itself.” ~St. Pius X

“Our Redeemer ever present in the most Blessed Sacrament, extends His hands to everyone. He opens His heart and says, 'Come to Me, all of you.” ~St. Raphael Kalinowski

“Put your sins in the chalice for the precious blood to wash away. One drop is capable of washing away the sins of the world. "The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. If Jesus had not established the Eucharist we would have forgotten the crucifixion. It would have faded into the past and we would have forgotten that Jesus loved us. There is a saying that to be far away from the eyes is to be far away from the heart. To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love.” ~St. Teresa of Calcutta

The Gospel - John 6:51-58

I Am the Bread of Life
by John Michael Talbot

Pondering these thoughts today: I have a deep passion of love and respect for the Eucharist, in a little ministry of my own, with how I receive. Maybe, just maybe this might interest you. Whenever I receive I don’t eat anything before I receive, at all. No matter when it is. Do you follow me? If I am going to 5:00pm Saturday night Mass I won’t eat all day, the ONLY thing that will touch my tongue will be the Holy Eucharist. Obviously the same goes with all Sunday Masses. That’s just me. If I know what Mass I am going to, I refrain from eating till after Mass. Jesus first always! I have been doing this for many many years.
