Joy of The Mass

BEADS OF JOY 08-20-18
“Joy of The Mass”

My Friends,

This is St. Patrick's Church; Milford, PA

Today I'd like to take just a moment and reflect upon the Holy Mass, that is the Holy Mass of the Roman Catholic Church. I am almost speechless with how beautiful and breath-taking it truly is. I absolutely get excited to be able to be at Mass, to kneel before the altar before Mass begins, looking in awe at the cross, the tabernacle and how truly precious and beautiful what was about to begin. Many years ago, (1986) actually back when I was first got married and me and my dad were just starting out in business, I attended Mass every single day before I even went to work, I did that for many years. My day was so complete when I received before I began. Then many years later when we were living in Niagara Falls, I joined up with an early morning Rosary group at St. Christopher's in Amherst, NY. We'd meet up in the chapel, we prayed the Rosary together and then all went to Mass together. Oh, how I miss that precious group of such devout, beautiful people.

I have been asked by obviously those who don't attended Mass, actually also by even some who do, "What is it that you see so special or fantastic (as you say) about the Mass?" I am a smiley kind of guy, so if before I respond to a question, if I give you a very joyful, extremely happy smile; you just know I will answer that question with no problem. For starters it's a combination of our Lord's presence, our traditions, and the prayers we pray, and the reverence we have approaching Jesus. I have to tell you, there is nothing I don't love about the Mass I love every aspect of it. I almost plead with all of you, if you can, if you can, please go to daily Mass; your life will never be the same. Jesus will instill inside of you such a love, such a joy, such true devotion to Him, deeper than just a Sunday love. And that’ spectacular if you go to Mass on Sunday. But if you can, it will truly be the best investment of your time that you have ever made in your entire life.

I just want to share a couple of the prayers that I absolutely love. I feel so close to my Lord when I take the time to pray before Him with a community of people who love Him as I do. I really love all the prayers at Mass.

Penitential Act

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Then they continue: therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. The absolution by the Priest follows: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ,
Only Begotten Son,
Lord God,
Lamb of God,
Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

These are incredible prayers. I just love it when a priest always allows us to pray these prayers at the beginning of Mass. Thank you Fr. Mullally, you really had a most special, very holy way of serving Mass for us. I miss your Masses.

I have attached a link that will walk you through the entire Mass. It's called "The Order of The Mass". Please embrace this, even read and recite and engulf yourself into the Mass entirely, even if only by reading the words as often as you can. I get the missal, like the church has in Mass, sent home to me. Way back in my early years of being born again, I use to literally spend hours, many many hours re-experiencing the Mass by reading through the missal over and over and over again, and wow did I fall in love with Jesus at Mass. I am so in love with Jesus, I can't get enough of Him. I still do that by the way, I usually always have a missal with me, it is such a special way to spend time with our Lord.

Pondering these thoughts today: Today I challenge you to look at the Mass in a whole new light. Maybe for the first time like this, with such love for our Lord. Really get into the prayers, learn all the prayers and all that the priest will pray; that alone will make the Mass come to life for you. And if you can, attended daily Mass, you will never be the same ever again, your life will be forever changed. Simple ask our Lord to guide your heart and life in the direction He so wants for you, and in doing so pray, "Jesus, I trust in You."

He Who Eats This Bread

BEADS OF JOY 08-19-18
“He Who Eats This Bread”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: John 6:51-58 (Body & Blood of Christ)
“I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So, Jesus said to them, ", truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever."

Reflection:
Today we shall focus on the magnificence of the Eucharist. It is not a mere representation of Jesus, on the contrary; the bread and wine becomes Jesus. Jesus clearly says, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." So, at every single time you go to Mass, a miracle is witnessed. This is why, we must go to Mass as often as we possibly can. Not only to witness the Mass and be there; but more importantly to be in God’s presence.

“In this world I cannot see the Most High Son of God with my own eyes, except for His Most Holy Body and Blood.” ~St. Francis of Assisi

“Christ held Himself in His hands when He gave His Body to His disciples saying: 'This is My Body.' No one partakes of this Flesh before he has adored it.” ~St. Augustine of Hippo

“O Lord, we cannot go to the pool of Siloe to which you sent the blind man. But we have the chalice of Your Precious Blood, filled with life and light. The purer we are, the more we receive.” ~St. Ephraem

“I hunger for the bread of God, the flesh of Jesus Christ ...; I long to drink of his blood, the gift of unending love.” ~St. Ignatius of Antioch

“How many of you say: I should like to see His face, His garments, His shoes. You do see Him, you touch Him, you eat Him. He gives Himself to you, not only that you may see Him, but also to be your food and nourishment.” ~St.  John Chrysostom

“He remains among us until the end of the world. He dwells on so many altars, though so often offended and profaned.” ~St. Maximilian Kolbe

“He is The Bread sown in the virgin, leavened in the Flesh, molded in His Passion, baked in the furnace of the Sepulcher, placed in the Churches, and set upon the Altars, which daily supplies Heavenly Food to the faithful.” ~St. Peter Chrysologus

“My Jesus! What a lovable contrivance this holy Sacrament was - that You would hide under the appearance of bread to make Yourself loved and to be available for a visit by anyone who desires You!” ~St. Alphonsus Ligouri

“Jesus has prepared not just one Host, but one for every day of our life. The Hosts for us are ready. Let us not forfeit even one of them.” ~St. Peter Julian Eymard

“The devotion to the Eucharist is the most noble because it has God as its object; it is the most profitable for salvation, because It gives us the Author of Grace; it is the sweetest, because the Lord is Sweetness Itself.” ~St. Pius X

“Our Redeemer ever present in the most Blessed Sacrament, extends His hands to everyone. He opens His heart and says, 'Come to Me, all of you.” ~St. Raphael Kalinowski

“Put your sins in the chalice for the precious blood to wash away. One drop is capable of washing away the sins of the world. "The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. If Jesus had not established the Eucharist we would have forgotten the crucifixion. It would have faded into the past and we would have forgotten that Jesus loved us. There is a saying that to be far away from the eyes is to be far away from the heart. To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love.” ~St. Teresa of Calcutta

I Am the Bread of Life
by John Michael Talbot

Pondering these thoughts today: I have a deep passion of love and respect for the Eucharist, in a little ministry of my own, with how I receive. Maybe, just maybe this might interest you. Whenever I receive I don’t eat anything before I receive, at all. No matter when it is. Do you follow me? If I am going to 5:00pm Saturday night Mass I won’t eat all day, the ONLY thing that will touch my tongue will be the Holy Eucharist. Obviously the same goes with all Sunday Masses. That’s just me. If I know what Mass I am going to, I refrain from eating till after Mass. Jesus first always! I have been doing this for many many years.

The Children

BEADS OF JOY 08-18-18
“The Children”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 19:13-15 (Blessing of The Children)
“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." And he laid his hands on them and went away.”

Reflection:
Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Opps, you know I stole that from a song. But it is 100% true, to God everyone is important. The disciples may have seen the children as noisy and fidgety at times; but Jesus didn’t see them that way, all he wanted to do was be with them. How do you feel about children? Are they a problem to you? A nuisance, you can do without? An issue you’d rather not discuss? You don’t have to say anything, so I will tell you how I feel about kids instead…

I love kids! I just wish we had more than 5 children of our own, I wish we had 8 or 10. I didn’t come from a big family, I only had 2 sisters, but my overall extended family was huge. And that gave me a GREAT desire to have a big family one day. My dad is one of 8 and my mom is one of 3. Whenever we had family gatherings there were countless family members everywhere, cousins and aunts and uncles and WOW I loved it!! I still remember the sound of the rumbling laughter and chatter of us when we were all together. Great memories of the past. And growing up visiting family was one of our normal weekend family activities. Oh, how I miss those days. Now everyone lives all over the country and so many them have gone to be with Jesus. Those were the days my friends, we thought they’d never end. Opps drifted off into song again... LOL Here is a picture of our 5 kids many years ago. I love this picture of them together.

Back then there were no cell phones, no i-Pads, no one cared about what was on TV, we didn’t even have cable. Clothes and sneakers weren’t an issue. Our greatest joy was being together. I can still remember my cousin Larry getting all the cousins on the steps in front of Grandma’s house and he’d play games with us. Sometimes guessing games and we’d talk and take walks. Play catch. Larry would take us for rides in his 1968 Chevy Chevelle Convertible which later became my dad’s which we restored. So many incredible memories. Memories of us cousins as “kids” who simply loved to be together and have fun together. Back in the 60’s – 80’s it was a much different world than it is today. Today, well I guess it all depends on where you live, but today the kids tend to be more into technology. They are not lost in the family relationships and gatherings. They have no idea what they are missing out on. I try to instill that to my children. The value of family relationships is priceless. Bur soon we will be even more scattered around the country. God knows our hearts. Thank God we have fantastic relationships and we are close.

Become One Flesh

BEADS OF JOY 08-17-18
“Become One Flesh”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Chrissy and I got married May 2, 1987 (our church wedding)
This is in the chapel at Our Mother's Consolation Convent.

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 19:3-12 (God Has Joined Together)
“And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So, they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery." The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."

Reflection:
Always a tough topic to discuss in today’s time, without a doubt. So, I am not going to write any sort of reflection of judgement using scripture, I have no right to. Instead I will reflect upon my own challenges and my own life. Some of you know me, some of you don’t. LOL! I laugh because that can be good and that can be bad. But in the same token it really doesn’t matter; because this is my story and with saying all that I can’t be placed in judgement. Everyone’s story is “their own” story. Their Life’s Reflection. Here’s my simple reflection of 30 years…

Back on October 24, 1986 Chrissy and I eloped… Oh Yes, we did. Then we raced out to Atlantic City, NJ for our long weekend get-away. Oh well, so much for a fancy honeymoon. But that’s ok, we weren’t into that kind of glamour stuff anyway. We are simple kind of “county folks” even though we were born and raised in NYC. Go figure! Any-hoot!

A rare picture I usually never post.

We did eventually have our “Church” wedding on May 2, 1987. Chrissy had to become a Catholic, she was Episcopalian; Mother Eugenia gave Chrissy personal RCIA lessons at Our Mother’s Consolation Convent. So, on Easter Morning Sunrise Mass 1987, Chrissy became a Catholic receiving all her sacraments on the convents grounds. The picture below is at the convent in their chapel where we “retook” our vows so all our friends there could see us, especially those who couldn’t make it to the church.

God Has Joined Together

Thanks For The Memories
In 2013 I got Chrissy – Mr. McRuff

Pondering these thoughts today: Well I guess the big question is: How have you guys survived after 30 years? After 30 years I have come to this conclusion.

My 30 Years of Wisdom:

1.     Always seek to be a Peacemaker. Pray together every single day. Let Jesus the be the absolute center of your relationship. And faithfully attend Mass together as a family. Faith, and the sacraments were our priority with our kids, long before they ever received them. We were front row, Mass goers with all our kids and I served on the altar often.
2.     Keep Your Spouse as Your Number #1 Top Priority: In all our 30 years, yeah, I got to do many of the things I enjoyed, but in full review, I made sure Chrissy’s requests were always made. She always had a roof over her head in a good neighborhood, food on the table, a reliable car and money in her pocket. Only in the latter years did she want to work. And I supported her decision 100%, encouraging her.
3.     Have a $0.00 hobby that consumes you. (writing, art, etc.) – this creates no financial pressure on the family. Chrissy and I both agreed on this approach.
4.     Cook and clean at meal time together don’t use a dishwasher (we have a dishwasher, but we don't use it). We really loved working together, cleaning dishes and pans to get our kitchen back together. It was our own little ministry. And it was always so much fun.
5.     Food shop together, learn each other’s likes and dislikes. And always look out for each other’s health. Prioritizing their needs before your own.
6.     Focus on the kids together making them the priority. We had a large family because we wanted one. Our kids are our wealth, our legacy.
7.     Never ever scream or fight EVER. Just to let you know we never yelled or screamed or cursed at each other. NO NOT EVEN ONCE. Nobody ever believed us, just ask the 5 witnesses who lived with us (our kids).
8.     Never say something you know you will regret. Love one another like you have just met for the first time. Love and respect always. Always!
9.     Take one day at a time in good and bad times. And recognize the difference and thank God together, laugh together, cry together.
10. And most of all Have Fun, Lots of Fun: This is so important, don’t let your relationship go stale and boring. Laugh and giggle and tickle and cuddle, watch movies together, lunch together. Together keep the relationship alive and delightful. It’ll be well worth it, you’ll see.
11. One more thing, if your spouse gets ill take care of them, even if it kills you: This is critical and real, if you can’t do this, something is wrong. I would have died for Christine in a heart-beat. I begged and begged and begged our Lord so many times in tears, screaming, to take me instead. My words used to be, “If there must be a sacrifice let it be me!” I cried so much in private.
12.To be continued... there is more

I Forgave You

BEADS OF JOY 08-16-18
“I Forgave You”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

 My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 18:21-19:1 (The Unforgiving Servant)
“Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So, the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, `Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denari; and seizing him by the throat he said, `Pay what you owe.' So, his fellow servant fell down and besought him, `Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, `You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt. So also, my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.”

Reflection:
One of the most important aspects of being a true follower of Jesus; is being able to forgive others for their wrong-doings against you. That I know is not easy, and it does take a lot of humility and even though society sees it as a weakness at times; it is actually a strength when you truly understand the process of true forgiveness. Mercy is actually the opposite of God’s justice. But mercy works like this; we must be merciful to others in order to receive mercy. Give forgiveness in order to be forgiven; that’s how it works hand in hand. In today’s gospel this servant even though he received mercy and forgiveness, he did not grant the same to his fellow servant who requested the same as he did. And for that this man, the one who received forgiveness -no longer deserved it.

Do you hold any grudges against anyone? Are you requesting forgiveness, but you are not willing to forgive? I think today’s gospel is very clear on the fact that we must give in order to receive when it comes to forgiveness and mercy. And most importantly let us not forget that Jesus paid a ransom to set us free from our sin. Through His most precious blood on the Cross we were forgiven of our sins and released from the clutches of satan. We must never forget that.

“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.” ~1 Corinthians 7:23

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

Forgiveness w/ Fr. Mike Schmitz

Pondering these thoughts today: Consider this my dear sisters and brothers. It was Almighty God’s tremendous love for us that set all of us free. Let us not forget the verse of all verses, almost all Christians know. That is how much God loves us; through the blood of His only Son He forgave us.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” ~John 3:16

Assumption of Our Lady

BEADS OF JOY 08-15-18
“Assumption of Our Lady”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 (The Canticle of Mary)
“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever." And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.”

Assumption of Our Lady

“Open the portals! The Queen is approaching. Lift up, O eternal gates!”

The endless parade of the blessed crowded about the wide-open gates of heaven. There was tense expectancy, such as one finds along a line of march as a parade approaches. A roadway of clouds billowed the pathway from an uncorrupted grave to an incorruptible throne.

At last, borne by angels, the lovely Lady arrives. It is the first Assumption Day, the Assumption of Mary. The heavenly throng gasps with admiration. The celestial singers burst into song. The angels hurry to and fro to catch a glimpse of her and to tell their companions of her beauty.

Jesus waits at the open entrance, throws His arms about His Mother, leads her triumphantly and happily to the very throne of the heavenly Father, who leans forward and places solemnly and smilingly upon her beauteous head the crown, as the Holy Spirit, heavenly Spouse of the Virgin Mother casts warmth and light upon the welcome newcomer.

The Assumption of Mary! Sweet scene of Mary’s bliss! Who can measure her happiness? Who can count the throbs of joy in her heart: joy that now her lonesome life on earth without Jesus is over; joy that now she has Him, never again to lose Him; joy that now she can enjoy His company without the interruptions of earth or sense; joy that now she can help everyone on earth who is devoted to her Son; joy that all the honor and all the praise and all the glory is given to her because of her Son; joy that the very crown she is wearing as the Queen of heaven and earth, is given to her because she is the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God; joy that an eternity is just beginning during which she can wrap herself in her Child and her Redeemer, even more closely than their lives had been entwined upon earth.”

Our Lady assumed into Heaven! Entering body and soul into the presence of the Most Blessed and Eternal Trinity! The Assumption of Mary! Her sufferings, great beyond all measure, are nothing now as she finds her reward in the greatness of the Infinite God. What eternal joy in His possession; what peace in being eternally possessed by Him – surely the richest reward for the obedient Handmaid of the Lord.

Our reward is likewise the possession of the same Triune God – our way to Him is likewise along the same royal way as tread so humbly and submissively the feet of our obedient Queen. Her last recorded words in Sacred Scripture, her counsel to the servants at the wedding feast, applies to us with equal and unfailing force: “Do whatever He tells you!” Our obedience to Christ is our way to joy and peace.

Mary’s death was caused by love that consumed her heart; her death was not meant for punishment nor expiation, hence there was no violence nor was it painful, since she was preserved from the dominion given to death by sin.

According to an opinion accepted since the Middle Ages, Mary’s death resembled Christ’s, because she accepted it voluntarily out of humble and loving obedience; so, she died of love in the strict sense of the word. Death came to her in the form of the weakening of the body caused by the supernatural might of Dying Love. Her natural vitality was exhausted by love-longing, by the strength of an ecstasy of love and her great love moved God to cease keeping her alive. Mary’s death was a holocaust of love where the sacrifice offered long before at the foot of the Cross in poignant and spiritual anguish was at last completed.

This feast, the Assumption of Mary, was instituted, according to Saint Bernard, in the very time of the apostles.
