We Are Unworthy

BEADS OF JOY 11-13-18
“We Are Unworthy”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 17:7-10 (The Loyal Servant)
“Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'?  Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So, you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

Reflection:
Are you compelled to give God your best? Is truth and honesty and your concern for others top priority? What are our top priorities, our duties as God’s servants? Here, the best way is to have Jesus tell us:

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment.  The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” ~Matthew 22:36-40

Now that we have some clarity, it is so much easier to reflect. So, we must be ready to give God our best! Regardless of cost! That is what being a good servant is all about. We’re talking about Almighty God. This is our eternity and Jesus gave His very life to save ours. This is different than any other commitment you will ever make in your life. You will only have One Lord and Savior, only One God. The way you love your spouse or your children or your family; is nothing like the way you love and honor the Lord.

If we are to be the BEST Servants, what is the number one focus, that we should have every single day we open our eyes? “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” Ok, then let’s begin with that in mind. Each day we must, without excuse, spend time in prayer, worship and focus fully on Jesus. I know that sounds too easy. Well it can be! When you open your eyes, begin your day with prayer. Say something like, “Good Morning Lord, thank you for allowing me to see another day to serve you.” And then throughout your day, make it a practice to acknowledge God’s presence in all things. “Thank you, Lord, for seeing my children off to school safely.’ Or “Thank you Lord for choosing me, I know my fellow co-worker is having a difficult day, I’m glad they took some anger out on me instead of someone else, I understand, I’d never respond with anger, only love.” We must always be thankful, no matter what the situation or outcome is. Then add scripture, devotions, Mass, confession into your daily life as much as you can.

Then the second most important thing we must do as servants is what: “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Others, must come first all the time. If you have never done this before it may take some practice, but that’s ok, God knows your heart. We are here to take care and look out for one another. God gave us each another, let us always place the needs of others before our own. A humble, selfless life is a great quality in a good servant of the Lord. I pray that you have a fantastic day. If you are an American, please get out and vote. Yes, your vote counts, just beware some voting machines automatically switch all choices to D after you make your final selection. Just be attentive. Please pray for America. We maybe on our final breath of existence and freedom. We need God’s mercy desperately today. Talk to you all tomorrow, hopefully as still a free country.

You Must Forgive

BEADS OF JOY 11-12-18
“You Must Forgive”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 17:1-6 (Temptations To Sin)
“And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea, then that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. Take heed to yourselves; if your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, `I repent,' you must forgive him."  The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" And the Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, `Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you."

Reflection:
Yes, we are all tempted and yes, we all sin. “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” ~ Romans 3:23 But, do we allow these temptations to continually drive us into sin constantly? Or Do we fight against these temptations through prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit; knowing that by God’s Grace we will get through the temptation? There are many ways to defend yourself against the temptations of this world. There are two that I have used my entire life. Do I still sin? Yes, but I find that I am more conscientious about virtually everything I do, because of these two things. So, by keeping my “guard up” I am doing all I can, not to be a complete fool to the temptations that lead me to sin.

These two wonderful ways that I keep my mind and my spirit occupied and busy and so distracted, from the desire to fall into temptation are; my life’s devotion to the rosary and my love for reading scripture every single day. And just to let everyone know, the rosary is all about Jesus in scripture. The Rosary keeps my mind focused on Jesus, His Joys, His Life, His Sorrows and His Glory. And the greatest part of that wonderful devotion is that it is all scripture based. Everything leads back to God’s Word. His Word is the foundation that helps me be strong. Consider these verses:

“Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ~Matthew 26:41

“No temptation has overtaken you, but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” ~1 Corinthians 10:13

And in the Lord’s Prayer we pray, ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” ~Matthew 6:13 There is far too much to share in scripture, I can’t jam it all up in this one blog. I urge you to spend time in scripture each and every day. It will not only change your life, your way of thinking; but you will be very contentious of all the things you do each day. I get call many things, but that’s ok I don’t care. I drive a little bit below speed limit, I obey laws no matter if there are crowds or I am completely alone. To me God is always watching every single thing I am doing. I don’t care what others see, I simply care what God sees; in the dark or in the light, complete alone or with others. To me it doesn’t matter. I do all things for His Glory, to Honor Him. Do not allow the temptations of this world to trap you and devour you, for in the end, they will win, and we will lose. God Bless all of you. Talk to you tomorrow.

Out of Her Poverty

BEADS OF JOY 11-11-18
“Out of Her Poverty”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 (The Widow’s Mite)
“And in his teaching, he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living."

Reflection:
What a title... What in the world does that mean? How do you give out of your poverty? The sentence doesn't make any sense. If you are in poverty, how do you give out of it? That is a great question, I am so glad you asked. Today let us reflect on a very simple gospel that reveals a truth that digs deep in many of us, and that is true charity. One thing I especially loved about this gospel is that Jesus, even in the busyness of His ministry, notices the true sacrifice of this woman over all the others, that gave from their wealth. Ok, I sort of alluded to the reality of what this gospel is all about. How far down deep do you dig to give? How much would you consider enough to give? Have you ever given so much that you even raised an eyebrow and thought, ouch, maybe that was too much? Or are you like so many who $1 (one dollar) the weekly basket, while in your other pocket you actually keep all your money? Please don't misunderstand, there are many very poor people who can only dollar the basket each week, and God Bless their generosity. Hmmm.. I know that strikes a sensitive cord with many, I don't apologize if it did. Not out of being rude, but out of being bold. But for the so many who truly give and do the right thing each week when it comes to sharing and giving, my hats off to you.

So let us look at this, "gave out of her poverty" statement, and really see what our Lord is talking about. Well for starters, we all know there is a huge difference between wealth and poverty, abundance and nothing, plentiful and minimal. You get the idea. So just by knowing all that, we already really have a handle on "gave out of her poverty". Let's say each week a person has about $100 of money that they can play with; you know, kind of play money after the bills are paid and food is on the table. Fine, now that would mean you have some extra money beyond your needs to spend. Now on the other hand, let's say like so many people in our world today; after you get paid at work and you pay your bills and put food on the table, you have nothing at all left over. In fact, you need more money to just make ends meet. You have nothing, many of us know that as living in poverty. Now say the person who had the extra money to spend and the one with nothing to spend went to Mass together. When the basket came around the wealthier person put in $40 and the person who had nothing put in $10. I think is rhetorical to our Lord's teaching, but who put in more money?

We all know the answer is, right, the person who put the $10 in the basket, put much more money than that of the one who put in $40. Now mathematically we know that is not true; but know that when it comes to charity and giving, math has nothing to do with it. If someone gives out of their surplus (their extra), they didn't really give from the heart, or should I say, they didn't give with a leaping step of faith. But if you give from the very little you have, and it takes away from the poverty that you live on, then you are giving out of your poverty. In other words, you can't afford to give anything, yet you still do. You have obviously placed more faith in God then in the very money you need to survive on. That is a super neat way to give, in complete trust and faith that God will provide if you run out. My rule of thumb, remember in a past blog I shared some of my rules for my kids with church. Giving is one of the key essential parts of our faith. You always give whether you can afford to or not. Period.

From "Respect My Father's House" blog posted 11/9/10: #4. Always put something in the offering every week, no matter what, always give. Yes, we all face challenges and we have times where it is impossible to (also) give to your church, my house rule is simple, if we have little, we must share it with Jesus, if we have a lot, we share even more, and the hardest of all, if we have nothing, even from that we must share.

Many times, during our roughest of times. I would gather the change from my car, the change tray on my desk, everywhere; it may only add up to $5-$6 and I’d put it in a zip-lock bag, attach it to our envelope and make sure we gave all we had at Mass. I kid you not. I hold nothing back for my Lord. See you guys tomorrow.

Give From Your Poverty

Dig deep in them pockets
Look for charity you wish to share,
Dig deep in them pockets
And give and give if you dare.

Don't lie to yourself as you give
And think that dollar can go in the offering,
Unless of cause all you have is that
Then indeed you are truly giving.

Dig deep in them pockets
Go below that extra line of funds,
Dig deep in them pockets
And really give if your extras in the thousands.

God don't require a set amount
He only wants it to be given trustingly,
God wants us trust fully in Him
So give always, from your poverty
.

God Knows Your Heart

BEADS OF JOY 11-10-18
“God Knows Your Heart”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 16:9-15 (God And Money)
“And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal habitations. "He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they scoffed at him. But he said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God."

Reflection:
True generosity does not make you poor, no; rather true generosity makes you rich. I guess the title for today’s blog should have been God or Money. And I’m not asking you to make a choice. I hope and pray that your choice is obvious. You know the blessings do come two ways with the rich and the poor, think about this: The rich who can easily help the poor, do so by being generous and giving of their riches to help those who have nothing (food and drink and place to sleep). And by the poor being poor they make it possible for the rich to be humble and charitable to help them by offering what they have. Does that make sense.

Ambrose, a fourth century Bishop once said, “The bosoms of the poor, the houses of widows, the mouths of children are the barns which last forever. The true treasure which lasts is the treasure stored up for us in heaven. God richly rewards those who give generously from the heart to help those in need.” Well said, something we should seriously think about and remember.

Who is your master? Who governs your life? Alright I’ll just ask: Is it God or Money? What controls our ideas, our desires, our heart, our choices? Yes, whatever it is, unfortunately or fortunately, will take the driver’s seat and it will take full control of many if not most or all the decisions in your life. So, when you choose, choose wisely. Whatever we possess or don’t possess is a gift from God. Yes, even not being wealthy is a gift. Some people may not be blessed with that. Some may become greedy and selfish and the very thought of sharing may never enter their minds; but being poor is a blessing because they never knew that they would be that way. I’m just being hypothetical. Another person could get into gambling or drinking in excess. No one knows, sometimes poverty has a wonderful way of keeping our lives plain and simple and very Christ centered. I am totally speaking for myself. I never fell into any of those categories when we did have money, but poverty has sharpened my faith and I am ever grateful. This is my wealth; I may not have a 401K or any sort of retirement; instead I have a JMJ-EHP!! and it is priceless! Oh, for you non-financial folks: JMJ-EHP is a (Jesus Mary Joseph -Eternity in Heaven Package), it’s available to everyone. Jesus bought one for everybody, yes everybody. He paid for it in full! Just love Him! Believe in Him! And Follow Him! And you can have one to!! I’m praying for y’all. Talk to you tomorrow.

My Father’s House

BEADS OF JOY 11-09-18
“My Father’s House”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: John 2:13-22 (Jesus Cleanses The Temple)
“The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers at their business. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; you shall not make my Father's house a house of trade." His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for thy house will consume me." The Jews then said to him, "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" But he spoke of the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.”

Reflection:
This scene is so unique and yet so important in our spiritual journey. What keeps you from being in God’s presence? Most people understand that the “Temple” the “Church” is the place where God dwells. With that said, this scripture captures the part of Jesus we don’t normally see, Jesus wasn’t happy and He, “...drove them out”. The only time we read about Jesus driving anything out, is when He drove out / cast out demons. Look at scripture that says just that:

Matthew 9:32-34 “As they were going out, a mute, demon-possessed man was brought to Him. After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees were saying, “He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

Mark 1:33-34 “And the whole city had gathered at the door. And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.”

Mark 16:8-10 “They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.”

1 John 4:17-19 “By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.”

There are many others, but look at the last scripture, it speaks of casting out fear, interesting how Jesus “cast out” everything that works against us deepening our faith. Demons pull us away from God presence, God’s love and all that is good in His sight… Now with all that said let’s go back to today’s gospel.

Money-changers of the time weren’t always honest or sincere. In today’s Gospel, this activity is called a, “house of trade”, but in Mark’s gospel version he refers to this as a, “den of thieves”. My reflection is that Jesus’ physical aggression shows me how important it is for us to stand for what is RIGHT; and if those in this world wish to offend our Lord, His Temple and our Faith –We must defend them. Being Christian doesn’t mean being wimpy and soft and easily pushed around. On the contrary, if we are to be true to our faith, true to our belief and most certainly true to Jesus –We must be BOLD in His defense. Scripture does say, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” ~1 Corinthians 12:27

In today’s gospel the “money-changers” were doing there sinful deeds on Holy ground. How dare they do evil deeds at God’s house. Jesus’ response is encouraging and insightful –defending His Father’s honor, respect the temple. I am greatly encouraged by today’s gospel, I hope and pray that you are to.

“Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is to bless us now.” ~St. Teresa of Avila

Joy In Heaven

BEADS OF JOY 11-08-18
“Joy In Heaven”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 15:1-10 (The Joy of Heaven)
“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." So, he told them this parable: "What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. "Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, `Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost.' Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

Reflection:
Like the shepherd and the woman in today’s gospel; do you search and search to you find what you have lost? In other words, do you seek out those you know who have lost their way to God? We must do this for one another; search for, pray for, help guide, lead, unite with, do all we can, to help assist one another to get to Heaven. The greatest reward of all; the ultimate reason why we are all here is for that reason alone. God has given us each other, so that we may help one another in fellowship; to encourage one another and be there for one another, as we all continue on this journey through life together.

Almighty God does not want to lose even one of us. Let us pray for all of us, that we may have the wisdom to know that God wants us all in His fold. We should not judge anyone; God alone is the only one to have the authority to do that. We are only to pray for one another. Love and mercy and compassion is the job of a true child of God. Let us be the children God wants us to be, helping one another by example and leading others only to Jesus.

Today’s Gospel is about seeking and reward. Seeking and searching till we find! And the reward is the joy of Heaven! Our time needs to be properly spent in what we do. God has granted all of us time and the amount that is unknown. Some of us are blessed with 20 years, while others get 90 years; the only thing is, we don’t know our number. So, we need to live a life in preparation all the time. Like I write in so many of my blogs, live a life that is fully focused on Jesus. Read your bible every day, go to adoration weekly, go to Mass as often as you possibly can, go to confession as often as you possibly can, select a devotion like the Rosary and make it yours and pray it every day. Do all you can to have Jesus in your life constantly 24/7/365. This will do much for you. It will make you a better person, and it will help to keep you always prepared for Heaven. I am always praying for all of you every single day. Talk to you again tomorrow my sisters and brothers.
