3rd Sunday of Advent

BEADS OF JOY 12-16-18
“3rd Sunday of Advent”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Luke 3:10-18 (The Preaching of John the Baptist)
“And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall we do?" And he answered them, "He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Collect no more than is appointed you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages." As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy  to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people.”

Reflection:
Today is the Third Sunday of Advent: Would you have traveled to listen to John the Baptist? Would you have questioned John? John’s message was all about Repentance, and it was rather practical. Are you ready to REPENT? This week we will reflect on how we might REPENT.  In the practical teachings of John the Baptist we learn a couple of things; for starters we must share our goods with others, especially with people and families we know who can’t even meet their basic necessities. Another important part of his message was about being fair with each other; never taking advantage of one another. This message for the times was probably more towards the tax collectors and sellers at the market who used scales. Today in our time, there are many more ways that we interact and that we can hurt, abuse or offend each other. Consideration for another is vital, John teaches that. Loving one another will later become one of our Lord’s key messages to us. Another part of John’s message I particularly liked was when he talks about us needing to be content with what we have.

Repent my dear sisters and brothers, yes me to. Take it one day at a time and make clean your life, your thoughts, your words, your intentions, your ulterior motives, everything inside and out… This week’s messages and blogs will be focusing on that very thought. -REPENT

Through the power of the Holy Spirit we begin this life in the Spirit so that we can clean up our life spiritually. Are we directing others to Jesus? Do you desire to be clean and ready in your Spirit, mind and body for Jesus? Let us begin and REPENT, making all things right in our lives. Together we can do this…

Prepare – For His Arrival

BEADS OF JOY 12-15-18
“Prepare – For His Arrival”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 17:9a, 10-13 (Coming of Elijah)
“And as they were coming down the mountain the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" He replied, "Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also, the Son of man will suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.”

Reflection:
Let us continue to PREPARE, Christmas draws near, and Jesus will be here. Throughout the entire Old Testament, the focus was all about pointing us in the direction of the Lord, John the Baptist was the last to direct us. Shall we focus and PREPARE our lives and our thoughts in preparation of Jesus’ arrival. He is coming you know. Our lives must be all about getting ourselves prepared for eternity. We have more than enough time to PREPARE; even though we don’t really know how long we will live.

You know I believe God is a very merciful God, and He really, really, wants all of us to be with Him in Heaven, no matter who we are. I see end of life suffering, especially for non-believers, as time for those who don’t believe to turn to Him. Of cause we must turn away from our sin and ask for forgiveness; I see the end of life in long suffering, as that time gifted to us by God. At that time most are surrounded by family and friends who mourn and pray by their bedside. Long suffering has purposed the way I spiritually understand it. God really loves us with a capacity we won’t ever understand.

Here is an interesting conversation I had with my two sons about 6 years ago, I’ll never forget it; Charlie said, “I have so many questions I want to ask God, when I see Him.” Travis immediately jumped in and said, “I believe the minute we see God, all the questions we ever wondered and thought about, will be immediately be answered just in seeing Him and we won’t have to ask Him anything.” I felt blessed to hear this conversation between our 12-year-old and our 16-year-old. The insight was astonishingly impressive. God is most certainly a part of their daily thoughts. Praise Jesus.

Today’s gospel is found in Matthew 17:9a, 10-13 (The Coming of Elijah). Today we end week 2 of Advent and tomorrow begins week 3. Week 3 will begin the week of focus on Repentance. As we PREPARE for His arrival, we must repent; we must cleanse our spirit and prepare our lives, so that we might be able to give all we have to Him. Our purpose in life must include our Lord, without Him, our purpose has no purpose. As this New Year approaches, plan and PREPARE to change the things in your life that you really want to change. It’ll be a fresh new start for all of us; to be closer and closer to our Lord.

Prepare – To Stay Strong

BEADS OF JOY 12-14-18
“Prepare – To Stay Strong”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 11:16-19 (Jesus’ Testimony to John)
“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon'; the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

Reflection:
Are you teachable and receptive to our Lord’s teachings? Does the life you live help you; better PREPARE yourself to hear our Lord’s message more clearly? It is always the humble at heart that easily finds and hears and knows Jesus, when we seek Him. It is humility that plays a significant role in our life’s journey leading to our Lord. So, when we PREPARE, let us keep all these things in mind. We will be called names; people will make up stories to try to discredit us and make us appear horrible. Let not our hearts be troubled; by the foolishness of fools. Stay strong in your faith and live with your shield locked in the upward position. <Smile> what does that mean? Jesus died for us, saving us, to protect us from the depths of hell; so that we might be united with Him. He is our shield; He is the one who will always deflect the abuse and hateful words against us. PREPARE for the treasures in Heaven that far exceed all things combined here on earth.

It is usually jealousy that leads to vengeance against another. Sad by most times that is so true. The Pharisees hated John, yet John never stopped nor ceased in his efforts to warn others to PREPARE the way of the Lord. We must truly remain humble at heart, never allowing jealousy or wasteful desire for worldly things; including titles in our name, letters at the end of name representing some place we went for worldly education or anything that takes our attention away from Jesus.

-Excerpt from my writings in 2009
It is in this short gospel reading that verses 18-19 is a very little-known parable. "The Parable of the Children's Game"

Why is it that it seems at that time that John the Baptist's message of Jesus had so much resistance? Some have said it was just spiritual blindness, others say the scribes and Pharisees were jealous. Both of these roadblocks caused the scribes and Pharisees to close their hearts to the message of John the Baptist, and then eventually Jesus' message. This parable and its brief explanation which I will explain shortly, has me wondering how in tune is everyone with the message of our Lord? Jesus shares the "Good News" to all those who listen, and His Good News fills us with immeasurable joy and freedom; but Jesus' Good News comes with warning to all those who refuse to obey.

Now let's look at the explanation of this parable: John and Jesus are the children; there was a call to play a wedding game, and then a call to play a funeral game. The others are the Palestinian contemporaries, who rejected the seriousness of what John was preaching and then rejected the light yoke of Jesus' preaching. Why is that so many were out of tune with either message? I guess we can say that like Jesus' time, our own generation of people are very selective hearing and block out Jesus in their lives.

Is there a problem in how we express our faith, are we spiritually dull? The Good News that Jesus shared with us needs to be shared with everyone. In my life our Lords Good News has exploded inside me with so much abundant joy that I absolutely cannot contain it. No matter what situation I am in, no matter how unfortunate I am in being worldly successful, or financially rich; the bottom to my life is none of that has anything to do with the extent of overwhelming exciting joy of Jesus that is in my heart. My love for my Lord is my life's treasure.

Wisdom is proved right by her deed.

Prepare – To Suffer

BEADS OF JOY 12-13-18
“Prepare – To Suffer”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 11:11-15 (Jesus’ Testimony to John)
“Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John; and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Reflection:
Are we called to be a martyr for our faith? How would you PREPARE if you were? Does fear shake through your body when you stand up for what you believe in; and in whom you believe in? Thinking about all this, do you wonder; is there really a way to PREPARE for this? Does our humility in our faith direct your thoughts; thinking that others must see us as weak and helpless, when we are humble and willing to suffer and even die? John the Baptist was killed for his faith in sharing the forthcoming of Jesus. I believe John’s life was a life that was all about always being prepared; he lived free of any worldly connections of pleasure or commitment. In today’s scripture, Jesus says, “…among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist,” Through the Holy Spirit we are bold in what we believe; and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we are led to align ourselves with Jesus more and more. PREPARE your heart, PREPARE your life and PREPARE your soul. Martyrs bravely stand up for the truth; as Jesus shed His Holy blood to free us, when we shed our blood in His defense, we unite ourselves more boldly with Him.

John was the prophet who ended the Old Testament, while directing everyone to Jesus, the beginning of the New Testament. He took a very bold step knowing that many hated his message. I wonder are there other ways that we can live our life as a Living Martyr? Not that we’d never be tested by the sword, but for today’s positive message of our Lord, let us look at how in our life of living for Him, that we can live as we die. Now that’s insightfully more true to our faith than just a bunch of words. PREPARE to be challenged my friends. Your humility will be tested and pushed over the cliff; but I know you will be fine.

Be a Living Martyr?? Hmm what could or does that mean? When we follow Jesus, “honestly”, ok, when we “Honestly Follow Jesus” and spend our life seeking Him out, what happens? If we are true to task and mission of living our life for Him, then we will be a living sacrifice for our love and faith in Him. Romans 12:1 says it all, referring to scripture is the greatest way to always remain focused on our faith, “…brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” In all things PREPARE and be prepared as you live each day for Him. Don’t live your life selfishly. Stop being so arrogant, the world does not revolve around you. Always place others needs and desires before your own. Think of others first, ask and be concerned about their well-beings always; just as John put the saving of another’s soul first and foremost in his life. We to can do the same with our family and friends.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

BEADS OF JOY 12-12-18
“Our Lady of Guadalupe”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Reflection:
Today we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A poor Indian boy named Cuauhtlatlatohuac, who was later at his baptism named Juan Diego. Here are the events related to the miracles of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Chronology of Events

1525 - Baptism of Juan Diego, by a Franciscan priest.

1531 - December 12, 1531, the day Juan Diego opened his tilma and roses fell to the ground in front of the Bishop. And on Juan Diego's tilma appeared an image of Our Lady exactly as she appeared at the hill of Tepeyac.

1946 - Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady to be the Patroness of the Americas.

1976 - The new basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe was dedicated to our Lady, just 4 miles from central Mexico City.

1988 - On December 12th, Our Lady of Guadalupe was raised to the status of a "solemnity" in all of the United States.

1999 - Pope John Paul II, at his 3rd visit to the sanctuary make the date of December 12th as a Liturgical Feast.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer
God of power and mercy, you blessed the Americas at Tepeyac with the presence of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. May her prayers help all men and women to accept each other as brothers and sisters. Through your justice present in our hearts, may your peace reign in the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Prepare – To Hold Him

BEADS OF JOY 12-11-18
“Prepare – To Hold Him”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 18:12-14 (The Parable of The Lost Sheep)
“What do you think?  If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So, it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

Reflection:
Isn’t the Season of Advent most beautiful?
A little rhyme I wrote…

The cold brisk air, we can see our breath when we speak;
as the snow refreshes and brightens our days.
The joy that fills the air, we can’t compare;
for it is Jesus who is on His way.
How true it is, that a baby child always brings such joy;
a smile, a giggle, the cute little smile of a baby girl or boy
.

We are waiting, as we PREPARE for the arrival of a most precious child. Jesus wants us to embrace Him. In my own reflection I see that Christmas also represents a time that we must hold Jesus. PREPARE to hold Him my friends. He isn’t a child, He isn’t a teenager, He isn’t an adult; rather He is an infant, an infant must be held. PREPARE to hold him my sisters and brothers, love Him and embrace Him. Hold Him and never ever let Him go!!!

There is no doubt; the shepherd was filled with grief and hopelessness in the thought that he lost one of his sheep. Like Jesus seeks our hearts and lives and looks of us; He continually and persistently hunted and looked for the one who is lost. Knowing that the others where fine and strong and wouldn’t stray; he kept looking for that one lost sheep. Jesus places tremendous value on each and every one of us; there is no limit to how feverously He will seek us.

Let us think of the dangers of being a lost sheep. Sheep can become easy prey once they become distant from the flock; especially if there is no shepherd anywhere insight. Fear also comes upon a sheep that can easily be trapped in a situation with no escape. Isolation from those who love us can be scary; especially when we are in grave danger, and our inner most gut tells us, this is bad. Surrounding ourselves with like-minded people and those we love and those who love us; secure our surroundings. We must PREPARE to always be on alert, not to stray. Let us PREPARE our hearts and our minds and our values; along with a community by our side, to strengthen our Spirit and to help strengthen each other.

Prepare – For A Miracle

BEADS OF JOY 12-10-18
“Prepare – For A Miracle”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel: Luke 5:17-26 (Healing a Paralytic)
“On one of those days, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith he said, "Man, your sins are forgiven you." And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies?  Who can forgive sins but God only?" When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, "Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" --he said to the man who was paralyzed-- "I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home." And immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home, glorifying God. And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, "We have seen strange things today.”

Reflection:
Let us start the week with a Miracle, a most Miraculous Healing. What do you keep or allow to be in the way in your life- that blocks or prevents God’s blessings? Nothing should be allowed or overlooked if it’s blocking you or preventing you from being with Jesus, clear the way, get rid of it. The blind shall see, the lame shall walk, the deaf shall hear and the paralytic shall be healed. God alone wants all of us to be healed. What do we do to live a life that makes time to PREPARE for these healings to be made possible? In our society many have been healed of many different kinds of diseases, some of which have been terminal and even limited in time and life expectancy; and miraculously they were healed. Even in the most difficult of times of our lives, let us PREPARE for a celebration in whatever direction situations and challenges go. Honestly PREPARE to celebrate, the victory isn’t always necessarily in the healing; the victory also resides in the suffering. Suffering for Jesus, and also for others we love who suffer; should absolutely be our main focus in this entire situation. Suffering is a blessing, it’s a very deep concept, but best understood when looking up the Cross. True love has no limitations on how much love is given. Chrissy in all her suffering was witness in her faith, even now 2 years later, her faith still encourages and inspires others. Our Lord’s purpose is not always known, but to know that in the end, it is all about us glorifying Him, it all sort of makes sense.

Jesus wants to heal all of us in every aspect of our lives; in our body including our minds and most especially our hearts and souls. By His grace we are freed from sin and bondage. Our lives we must be open to Him, to allow Him to come into our lives to heal us. He will always love us, even if we don’t love Him; His love for us is not based on whether we love Him or not. With that all said, let’s keep in mind that also in His death that He died for all of us; including the lovable and the unlovable. Nothing in this life can separate or even in all things combined; can never compare the magnificence of God’s love for us.

So, throughout this Season of Advent let us do all we can to better PREPARE our lives and our soul for our Lord’s arrival! For His love and His miracles. No one is perfect, I think we all know that already, but we can try our best to live a life that is much more pleasing to our Lord. Mary will forever intercede for us, always leading our hearts to our Lord. Through prayer, meditation and contemplation; let us better PREPARE our lives for Him and His presence in our life. He shall always be the most precious gift we shall ever receive, and most wonderfully we shall always that special gift, every Christmas morning.
