The Will of My Father

BEADS OF JOY 08-14-18
“The Will of My Father”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

This is the altar inside the dome at the,
National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima - Lewiston, NY

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 (Who is the Greatest?)
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So, it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

Reflection:
I can’t always explain the Joy, but I always try. Today in the end of the gospel there is a parable, only four verses but it is awesome, and it is there! I really love parables; I enjoy reading them, reflecting upon them and sharing them. I think many of you already know that. Today’s gospel actually covers three topics: Who is the greatest? Temptation to sin; and The Parable of the Lost Sheep. The first part of the gospel was a bit surprising when I first heard this many years ago. Jesus taught love, unselfishness, giving of oneself to another; however, did this question of “who is greatest?” come up? Interesting thought, I guess inside many of us, we want to be the center of attention; the first, the best, the most, just to be recognized for it. God only knows what that’s all about. But today let us look upon the second half of today’s gospel, verses 10-14; that is all about the Parable that almost sums up our mission as followers of Jesus.

Jesus clearly tells us that God absolutely does not want any of us to be lost and led astray; look at verse 14, “So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” It is our mission as believers, the faithful; to seek out the lost and bring them home. This is not going to be easy, and it may take some time and some pain to see some of them through, but with God’s love and our faith and trust in Him, we will be given the strength necessary to do this. Scripture confirms that even in Heaven many rejoice, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7. Many of us know those who need Jesus in their lives, we know the lost and those who wonder. Let us try to direct them with love and compassion to return to the flock; for at their return there is only love and compassion and forgiveness. No one will be turned away; our only desire is that they return to the arms of Jesus.

Fr. Philip Dabney, CSsR - The Finest Prayer

Pondering these thoughts today: How can we really draw others to Jesus? How can we lead back, the misled and misinformed? In our prayers we can ask God through the Holy Spirit to guide us, and to give us strength. For starters I believe the best approach on someone who refuses to hear anything about Jesus or our Blessed Mother, is to continue to pray for them. And keep praying for them, every single day, pray for them. Prayer is a gift you can give away, over and over again. And the greatest part about praying for someone else is that they can’t stop you, and in fact most of the time they don’t even need to know. Just try to be “Jesus” in their lives. Meaning, give them love, compassion, forgiveness, and have concern for their challenges; and always have open arms and always be understanding with them, show them, without saying a word, how Jesus has changed who you were -to who you are. Let us, in our travels, become seekers of the lost, seeking and leading others home. Planting seeds of Joy, Hope, and Love are a great way to start. The more of us that do this for the lost, will result in the less that will be lost, and more will be returning home. Pray about this, ask God for His will to help you to seek out others to draw them back to Him. You will see opportunities open up, and people will be led to you. His Will is the only way. God Bless all of you and all your efforts in seeking out the lost.

They Were Gathering

BEADS OF JOY 08-13-18
“They Were Gathering”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 17:22-27 (Speaking of His Death and Taxes)
“As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were greatly distressed. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not your teacher pay the tax?" He said, "Yes." And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?" And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Reflection:
This title of the gospel, really tells the entire truth behind how Jesus did indeed suffer, on multiple levels. Our betrayal with our sins continues to nail Jesus upon His cross; and it was Judas’ selfish greed that led him to the ultimate betrayal to his dear friend, our Lord. In today’s gospel we see ultimately that it will be through His death and resurrection that Jesus would defeat death. The only way to be resurrected, is that He must die first. The gospels predicted three times that Jesus would suffer and die. And when the Apostles heard this, it must have scared them to some degree, like Jesus said to them, “You will be hated by everyone because of me,” Matthew 10:22. That same hatred will make them targets after Jesus was betrayed and murdered. What is betrayal? Sad topic to talk about for me; I know and understand betrayal to well. I am not a saint, and I am far from perfect, but betrayal from someone you love and trust cuts deep inside of you. It absolutely tears you apart. Greed and selfishness -especially against those you love cuts deep.

Betrayal: defined. After researching such a horrible word, that only reveals a horrible action from another, it only further hurts seeing how Judas’ betrayal to Jesus was, thoughtless and selfish. How can someone who loves you, say they love you, shows they love you and even acts like they love you; stab you in the back with lies and false accusations? Unfortunately, it happens in our everyday world, every single day, at work for advancement and raises and bonuses of sorts; and sadly, even at home between spouses and to and from children. Betrayal defined is like this: 1. To lead astray. 2. To deliver to an enemy by treachery. 3. To reveal unintentionally. 4. To prove false. It takes many lies, followed by more lies and continued with even more lies to really betray someone. So, in the end, the one betraying, isn’t only a betrayer; but they are also a lying, back stabbing, untrusted person. How sad it is, when this person is someone you do trust in. There’s a saying, “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.” I look and wonder what that really means in today’s reflection. Actually, the closest ones to you, have the power to hurt you the most, why? I believe it’s because of the trust and love you share with that person. They know you well enough, to destroy you, even with all their lies. Sad how ruthless another will be to someone they love, out of selfishness and greed. Don’t be that person, love one another with a full heart of compassion and tenderness, always placing others before yourself.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

(he is a dear long-time Fr. Joe)

Pondering these thoughts today: How do we deal with betrayal? How did Jesus deal with betrayal? He didn’t defend himself against all the lies; He didn’t even argue or show hatred to those who hated Him; He only showed compassion and love to the very people who were out to kill Him, He even forgave them. How can we learn from all this, to be more like Him? It is a hard teaching, not an easy task by no means, for anyone. I honestly know what it’s like to be deceived, betrayed and then stabbed in the back by someone you love and adore so much; someone I would die for to protect. (this person is not within my household) I understand how a person’s lies, fueled by their selfishness and greed to do what they want to do, can destroy others horribly. We all need to take a step back, kneel down in prayer and ask Jesus to help us, to guide us. Don’t make the terrible mistake of letting your selfishness, pride and greed; lead you down a road of betrayal. We need to ask Jesus to help us, to be more like Him. God knows our hearts, He knows our intentions, and He also knows when we don’t know what to do. Simply trust in Him and ask Him to help guide you. Peace and love always to you my sisters and brothers.

The Living Bread

BEADS OF JOY 08-12-18
“The Living Bread”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

This is my church: St Vincent de Paul Church; Dingmans, PA

Today’s Gospel: John 6:41-51 (The Bread of Life Discourse)
“The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." They said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, `I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them, "Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, `And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except him who is from God; he has seen the Father. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh."

Reflection:
The Bread of Life. Sustains us as we make our journey toward Heaven. Let us consider in this reflection the simple nourishment of bread. It sustains us, it strengthens us, it helps us move forward, it fills our belly with contentment so that the hunger pangs quiet down. It is through the simple digestion of bread that we can take another step forward; knowing our body received the nourishment of a piece of bread. Simple yet very profound.

The Bread of Life. Sustains us and gives us strength to stand strong in what we believe. Never let anyone steer you away from your faith. I know we all have different levels of tolerance; but when it comes to believing in Jesus and being loyal to Him, we must never surrender that allegiance we have for Him to anyone else. Spending time with Jesus through Adoration and the Holy Mass gives us so much strength and confidence to be more solid in our faith. One day we will be united with Him, keep that in mind each day.

The Bread of Life. Sustains us in ways we cannot fully understand right now; but simply knowing that through the Eucharist we are strengthen, is enough. Go to Mass as often as you possibly can, that is the key connection we have with Jesus Christ while we are here now. Every time you go to Mass give Jesus your undivided attention and allow Him to consume you; while you are there to consume Him. If you can, be at Mass 15-30 minutes early. Find your seat and spend time thinking about how much you love Him and how much you will always love Him. That is a very special time for me when I go to Mass, on Sunday or any day.

Pondering these thoughts today: Well, you knew the question was coming: What do you expect to receive? When you come to Mass or to the altar what do you expect? A healing? Forgiveness? Comfort during difficult times? Or a place to find rest so that you can rejuvenate? Well the good news is that you can find all that and even more. Jesus, through the Eucharist strengthens us and enables us to be strong in our faith. Nothing else in this world can do for us what Jesus can do for us through the Eucharist. That is why going to Mass every single Sunday and Holy Day and as often as possible is so important. Much to think about my friends.

The Boy Was Cured

BEADS OF JOY 08-11-18
“The Boy Was Cured”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 17:14-20 (Healing the Boy with a Demon)
“And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this  mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."

Reflection:
This is our Lord's very first miracle after He was seen by Peter, James and John at the Transfiguration. This healing is very powerful, many people witnessed this, and many people knew this man and his son.

Kudos and a high five to this very distressed dad, a true man of honor, one whose heart is for Jesus no doubt. Picture the scene: This dad sees Jesus, knows who He is, rushes over to Him on behalf of his son, most likely knelt or bowed down to Jesus (he did call him Teacher which means Rabbi), he asked for a healing for his son, but I'd say he may have been begging, knowing the disciples couldn't heal him, figuring maybe his son couldn't be healed. This man was brought humbly down to his knees before a large crowd of people. I’m sure it was an absolutely moving scene to have witnessed. This father’s love for his son shines brightly in today's scripture.

My mother's mom had epilepsy. From when I was a little kid, I'd see her have seizures, fall on the floor and lay there for a while. My grandpa, bless his soul, really loved grandma. As soon as he knew she was going into a seizure, he'd hold her tight, now my grandpa was small; and during her epileptic seizure she gained much strength, so holding her was a challenge, even for my grandpa who was a boxer in the Navy. But he'd hold her and say, "Susan, Susan, look at me, relax, relax." Then he made sure she didn't swallow her tongue. Pretty dramatic scene, but normal to me, seeing it all my life. So, I can relate to some degree with how this dad had to be there for his son.

Today this father succeeded in his plea to Jesus to heal his son. Let us never lose hope, that we can't have the same healing. Be brave and bold like this father was. Let the love you have for one another combine with the love you have for Jesus, and as soon as you possibly can, unite the two together. And pray and pray and pray, asking for God's mercy. And then trust and trust and trust that in His time, you will be healed and blessed in accord to His will.

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

A Prayer For Personal Healing

Pondering these thoughts today:
Even though Jesus rebuked the evil Spirit, and the man fell to the ground; it wasn’t the man who was in anguish, it was the devil who was suffering. Jesus punished the evil spirits within the man, the captive within was punished for what he had done to this young man. We must trust fully in His love and His mercy. Especially when our loved ones and those we love are suffering in anyway. Consider praying for those who are hurting and suffering, physically and emotionally. A scare doesn’t have to bleed to need a healing. Here’s a pray I wrote while Chrissy was suffering.

“My Lord Jesus, please help my unbelief. I know sometimes it seems like I have doubt in You Lord, but I don't, I never did, I never will. I think that's the human fear that is within me at times. My heart knows You, and my Spirit is alive inside, and it’s all about me desiring to get even closer to You. Also know my Lord, I place all my trust in You, You alone I give my full trust and allegiance to every single blessed day. You allow me to walk this earth. Please take care of my Chrissy, she means the world to me and I love her with all my heart and I know you know that. Thank You for everything, I love You with all my heart Lord. Amen.”

Must Follow Me

BEADS OF JOY 08-10-18
“Must Follow Me”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:  John 12:24-26 (Jesus’ Hour Is Coming)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.”

Reflection:
No doubt Jesus is speaking of His own death and rebirth when He is speaking of the grain of wheat that dies. But look at verse 25, that is hardcore faith out of the mouth of Jesus. “Selfishness” will ultimately destroy anyone, after all that is what loving your life is all about. When we focus so much on what we want; on what we desire, what we need, what we like, what we have accomplished, isn’t that selfishness? We are all guilty of that, me included. We must do all we can to constantly keep ourselves in check; and do all we can to get back on course and stay focused on Jesus. Prayer and confession do that.

If we deny ourselves and live our lives for Jesus we will have eternal life with Him. What can this life offer to us that would even come close? That was rhetorical by the way. The answer is: Nothing! Yes, we can go ahead and say, “Who cares I love this life of mine. I love my big beautiful expensive home, I love having a really nice cars in my driveway and my ability to travel worldwide whenever I feel like it; I simply love it. It’s all about me! I deserve it, I earned it!” Yes, anyone can say that. And I will say to some degree you are correct. But, to be fair. Jesus died so that you may have life. So, without that life and His blessing you would have nothing. So technically, it’s because of Him that you have all these blessings and these things in your life.

Know that I am not against success. Absolutely NOT. But there needs to be a balance of reality in that success. Anyone who is that successful should be reaching out to those who are suffering. God has blessed you for that reason. Do you not see that? How many friends and family members do you know out there who are struggling or deal with hunger issues? How many friends and family members do you know out there who have life threatening illnesses and stare death in the face daily? And I can go on and on. Or do you even care, or do you even know? You / We need to think about this very seriously and say to ourselves, “What can I do to make their lives easier?” “How can I share the blessing I have been blessed with to make their burden lighter?” If we all can live a life that is humble and not selfish but giving and loving towards others; the world we live in would be so much better. Those are my thoughts.

Build My Church

BEADS OF JOY 08-09-18
“Build My Church”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

This is St. Patrick's Church in Milford, PA

Today’s Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23 (You Are The Christ)
“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am? "Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock,  I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Reflection:
This is truly a great gospel today. "But who do you say that I am?” I love that Jesus comes straight out and asks the ultimate question to Peter. And Praise Jesus! Peter replies with the ultimate answer, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." The true litmus test of our faith. How firm are we in our faith and knowledge of who Jesus is? How sincere and honest would we be if confronted with the same exact question face to face with Jesus? I intentionally always ask lots of questions that I don’t always answer in my reflections, so that everyone can reflect on their own from their own life. Jesus knows our heart and the answers to these questions regards to what we might say.

How many of you love the New Testament like I do? Currently I am studying the Old Testament, we have a local study group amongst some friends. I will say there is not one boring part to the Old Testament it is very exciting; but what I do miss in the Old Testament is the fact that I am not reading directly about Jesus. I know I am reading about what is leading up to Him and how everything leads up to Him, I understand that and within the next two studies we will be studying John The Baptist, ending the Old Testament and introducing the New Testament. I really, really love the New Testament. I am so excited just thinking about those future studies focusing fully on Jesus. The New Testament is so directly and purposely about Jesus. I love that so much.

I think I just went off on a tangent. I would encourage all of you to begin some sort of Bible Study and if you are unable; then might I encourage you to begin your own personal reading study time so that you might absorb the scriptures. In the past in my life, my Spiritual Life of 35 years. I have read the entire Bible 2 times. I admit looking back when it was all new and I was excited it was in many ways just a read for me. But now it is so much more for me. It has become my life. In the background I enjoy studying the Old Testament, but on a daily basis I live the New Testament. Here is a suggestion of what you might like to try. I have been doing this method (that I designed) for over 18 years.

Great Is Your Faith!

BEADS OF JOY 08-08-18
“Great Is Your Faith!”
©2018 James Dacey, Jr. OFS

My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Matthew 15:21-28 (Canaanite Woman’s Faith)
“And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.”

Reflection:
At first this woman was put off or, so she must have felt that way by Jesus. Do you ever feel ignored by the Lord? What is your immediate response? Do you get down on your knees and plead your case like this Canaanite woman did? We have a merciful, loving, caring Lord who only wants the best for us. All we need to do is open our arms and our minds and our lives to Him; His are already open and waiting for us. This Canaanite woman has shown us that even someone outside the faith, outside the city, outside the circle of believers; there are those who truly believe and love Jesus, all we have to do is reach out to them and love them and embrace them into the circle with us.

This Canaanite woman expresses true faith in turning to Jesus, knowing He is the answer to her prayers. Look at verse 25: “But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." With full reverence and respect, she came before Jesus with an expectant faith not questioning who He was or what He can do, but rather knowing He was the answer to her prayers. Do we do the same when we are in need and we are looking for our prayers to be answered? Jesus is the one to always turn to, plead your case before Him and open your heart and love Him and trust in Him. He knows our deepest thoughts, He knows the depths of our faith and trust in Him.

Fully trusting in Him even in the worst of times when all things look and seem really bad, is the best thing we can do. God’s Will shall prevail. I know this first hand. We have walked down many dark alleys not knowing the outcome. Some have not been good, but some have taught us, and some have shown us how trusting Him was the only way we were going to make it through. Our life can be looked at as a bunch of “OMGs’” or “No WAY!!” or ”I’M SO SORRY” and we made it through… Yes, the road ahead, now is so exciting, because of Jesus in my life. All we can do is trust in Him and Jesus will see us through everything. He always does.
