Today’s Gospel:
Mark 12:13-17 (Questions
about Paying Taxes)
“And they sent to him some of the
Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to entrap him in his talk. And they came
and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man;
for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he
said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin and let me look at
it." And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and
inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's." Jesus said
to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the
things that are God's." And they were amazed at him.”
Reflection:
They tried to trap our Lord. The Pharisees aren’t too smart, when they think they can outsmart Jesus. Yes, Jesus did have an answer, and instead of giving a direct answer that was political; He turned it into a spiritual answer, of great significance. "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."V.17 That answer is brilliant and profound. You want to give Jesus a high five and just dance and shout with joy. Jesus separated the argument keeping our focus on God and keeping the love of the coin and wealth on Caesar. Absolutely brilliant.
“He who desires nothing, but God is rich and happy.”
~St. Alphonsus Liguori
“We should have no more use or regard for money in any of its forms than we have for dust. Those who think it is worth more, or who are greedy for it, expose themselves to the danger of being deceived by the Devil.” ~St. Francis of Assisi
There are many ways that we can give to others, it’s not always about money. We can:
§ Give a smile to brighten
up someone’s day;
§ Give up some of our time to help others out;
§ Give a helping hand in so many ways;
§ Give a cooked meal, our time, it all helps a lot;
§ Give your attention to listen to someone;
§ Give someone a hug, there are many lonely people;
§ Give a gift, wrapped with a bow and card;
§ Give of yourself by sharing with others; and
§ Give of yourself, with love and compassion;
Giving is the KEY to getting closer to Jesus. We must give all that we have, just like Jesus did. He gave everything, including His life.

Paying Taxes to Caesar
Pondering these thoughts today: Do you live your life with the full knowledge and acceptance that everything you have, everything you own, and everything receive and own – comes from God and is God’s? This thought includes every aspect of ourselves, our body, our mind and our thoughts. It’s not an easy understanding as you dig deeper into this thought -but we must, to the best of our ability; present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God. Think about everything you have, yea everything; do you honestly willingly know that it all belongs to God? And if you do understand that, do you hoard it, embrace it, and refuse to let it go? If you understand God has blessed you, the greatest thing you can do with His blessings, is pass them on, bless others with your blessings. Share what you have, after all it’s not yours – it’s God’s. And in doing so, those you share it with, can also share it with others. We truly must do all we can to take care of one another.
