Wedding at Cana - Mary Intercedes
©2011 James Dacey, Jr. SFO
Hello Everyone,
DECADE OF THOUGHT: "Wedding at Cana - How do you see Marys role as mother and intercessor, does Mary comfort you the same?"
As we move through the decades, we can't help but to be in awe of how magnificent Jesus truly is. Our God has blessed us with the scriptures, and a Lord for us to love, who has always loved us. This fantastic, blessed mystery is our Lord's first public miracle, prompted and encouraged by His mother. Our Blessed Mother is really a very loving, very alive part of our prayer life, not only in her love for us; but more so for her intercession with her Son for us, on our behalf. I keep feeling led to share the entire scripture for these mysteries, they are so exciting to read and see in complete form, as we share and reflect upon the mystery. I simply love scripture, but how many times have I said that in the blog? Too many times, but I will continue sharing that Joy. Well here's the scripture for the second Luminous Mystery (The Wedding at Cana).
John 2:1-12
"On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days."
Jesus answered His mother's request, at first He was like, no, no, no.. :) But He gave in, how can not He resist such a loving, beautiful, God fearing mum. She knew her Son's purpose and ability, I guess like many moms today, think about their own kids. Jesus not only blessed this young couple, but simply being present at their wedding; He further blessed it by saving them from the embarrassment of no more wine to celebrate. I stress "saving them" for a reason. It was through Mary's intercession on behalf of the young couple, that Mary stepped in, and requests her Son's help. Who knows maybe this could have started a family feud, or something worse. Maybe the brides family would have thought, this boy can't take care of our daughter, if he can't even project and manage a simple wedding. Who knows, maybe one of the cousins or a neighbor coordinated wine delivery to the house. :) No matter, all we know is that according to scripture, Mary knew, and so interceded for them; as she does for us.
It is said that Jesus produced 120 gallons of the best wine that day. Could you imagine how much that may have been worth? I only speak of its value because of the richness in the magnitude of our Lord's first public miracle. This was way over the top for this humble young couple; but that was in God's will to overly bless them today. This is a wonderful example of how far our Lord will go for us; and how much His mother's presence in our life will make all the difference. Please embrace our Blessed Mother. She is always looking out for us, and she has a front row seat next to her Son. Mary loves us so much, she only wants us to love her Son all the more. Another way you might be able to understand why we should love and respect our Blessed Mother so much is this, look at it this way: If you love your spouse, your best friend, your kids friends, anyone pretty much; to further extend your love and respect for that person, you in-turn show love and respect to their mom and dad. Does that make sense. See if we can't respect and love the parents of those we love, then we never really loved that person anyway, it's all a lie. For the person we love is an extension of the very parents, more so the very mother who gave birth to that person. So step up to the plate with your friends and your families friends; and be kind and loving and caring towards that persons parents.
"We never give more honor to Jesus than when we honor his Mother, and we honor her simply and solely to honor him all the more perfectly. We go to her only as a way leading to the goal we seek - Jesus, her Son." ~Saint Louis Marie de Montfort
"The world being unworthy to receive the Son of God directly from the hands of the Father, he gave his Son to Mary for the world to receive him from her."
~Saint Augustine, Father and Doctor of the Church
"Let us bind ourselves tightly to the Sorrowful Heart of our Heavenly Mother and reflect on it's boundless grief and how precious is our soul." ~Saint Padre Pio
