My Friends,

Today’s Gospel:
Mark 9:30-37 (Second Prediction of The Passion)
“They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him. And they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?" But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." And he took a child and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me."

Reflection:
If we want to be filled with God's love, we must first empty ourselves of everything that stands in the way - pride, self-seeking glory, vanity, etc. God wants an empty vessel, so He can fill you with His love. Are you ready to humble yourself and to serve as Jesus did? It is possible to live a sacrificial life within the parameters of family life. I am no saint, but the way Chrissy and I raised our children, and we had Jesus as the center of our love for one another; it was truly a ministry we both loved. We always put God first. It wasn’t always easy, but in our hearts, it was our top priority.

Let us not forget, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ~James 4:6. In scripture and even in the writings of the saints, we are taught about being rooted in our faith, solid and strong, as we grow in our faith. Look at what St. Augustine says, “Observe a tree, how it first tends downwards, that it may then shoot forth upwards. It fastens its root low in the ground, that it may send forth its top towards heaven. Is it not from humility that it endeavors to rise? But without humility it will not attain to higher things. You are wanting to grow up into the air without a root. Such is not growth, but a collapse."

The Gospel - Mark 9:30-37

Pondering these thoughts today: Let us consider what St Augustine wrote. Healthy trees are watered and given lots of sunshine. This wonderful combination of what matters, allows the tree to grow strong, deep roots.

It just seems right today to look at the bigger picture with today’s gospel. That is why I added the link to the entire Jesus Film. It is somewhat narrated (well done), I love this one, this is one of my favorites. Enjoy and God Bless you.
